What's new

Dante Exum has turned into Danny Green (...and his worrying lack of aggression)

Exum gets into the paint at will but you see him pass or pull out and the coaching staff approves.

Stats are not really useful in evaluating Exums case right now.

Just think, when exum is twice the age he is now, and we are getting ready to unveil a statue of him and hayward next to the stockton and Malone statues, will anyone be comparing him to Danny green?

It's your fantasy, so why don't you tell us? :p

Do you think they would just do a statue of hayward, exum and gobert and call it the Eiffel tower?

as soon as exum starts taking the roids his agression will increase.

he needs to spend some time in the outback and learn more about the crocs. besides crocs are silent and methodical until they are ready for the kill. he is not ready for the kill yet.

Most journalists hoped Exum could at least get into game shape by New Years.

Is it time to panic about a 5th pick in a poor draft? Who did you want Noah or Smart or Randle?

Sad isn't it? Was said to be the prodigy draft. I think the truth is that it was the potential draft and we got a guy with a lot of it.

I wanted Exum at 5 and if given the choice between them now, I'd choose Exum again. That doesn't mean that we can't say anything negative about him or we can't talk about any worries we have about him. This defensiveness and refusal to engage in any conversations about his shortcomings is insane.

Yeah, and not too far off of tony parker. This obviously does not mean a lot. Dante has not even played half of a season. I am curious to see how much improvement some of these rookies saw over the course of their rookie seasons.

Kobe Bryant's first 10 games - (FG) 14/34 - (FG%) 41% - (3pt) 8/16 - (3pt%) 50% - (Reb) 12 - (Asst) 4 - (Steals) 1 - (Pts) 49 - (PPG) 4.90

Kobe did play less minutes than Dante, but let's consider the circumstances. . .

A. Dante is no where nearly physically ready for the NBA. He needs to get a lot stronger and bust his *** working out with Gobert and Hayward this offseason. If he makes the kind of jump next year that Rudy, Derrick and Gordon have made so far this year. . . well damn. . .

B. The 2014/15 Utah Jazz are nowhere nearly as talented as the 1996/97 L. A. Lakers. While Hayward, Favors and Gobert have all look really good and very improved over last year, the Jazz don't have anyone like a Prime Shaquille O'Neal. Nick Van Excel was a quality starter, and Kobe was an assassin off the bench who was supposed to be aggressive and score when he was on the court. I don't think that Quin wants Dante to go quite that route yet.

C. Exum has one of the steepest jumps in competition in recent memory. From Australia HS kids to the NBA. Wow. He's still not in good enough condition to contribute much yet and he's not nearly as confident or aggressive as we'd like him to be. But I've seen him be that confident and that aggressive earlier during summer league and early in the season. As he gets stronger and the game slows down for him (and he continues to work daily with guys like Hayward and Gobert) I think that he'll become more confident and aggressive.

D. Exum is playing the way that his coach wants him to, while still contributing and generally being about as productive as a player like him should be at this point. I sure hope that he gets stronger and in better shape as the season goes along and becomes a more aggressive scorer and passer as Gobert, Favors and Hayward continue to show improvement as a starting unit.

E. This is a very, very young team that is very, very inconsistent. Trey Burke has really struggled shooting, but pretty much every young guy has shown improvement (if not considerable improvement) since the beginning of the season. I think that Quin Snyder might be the best developmental coach in the league. Dante will get better as he gets bigger and stronger. He still has that ridiculous length, vision, passing and first step. He's playing about as well as can be expected for a rookie 35 games into his first season against grown men, and should continue to get better as he gets more experience.

A few things that I noticed when putting together the numbers from these two players. . .
Kobe's shot 41% consistently, but his 3pt% went down as he started shooting more. Dante's FG% is nearly identical, even though he started out pretty rough from 3pt%, and he has improved as he's gotten more experience and playing time. Whatever Quin's plan for him is, he's improving as a shooter and has been pretty consistent. Kobe was really hot or cold as a rookie. He had multiple games early on with no points at all. Dante has scored in almost every game he's played in. I'm hoping that the plan is for him to drive more and finish, which should lead to more drive and dishes. I'm pretty happy with his assist rate so far, and think that it should improve as he assumes a bigger role later this year. I'd like to see him run more P&R too. I think that he'd be pretty excellent at it with any of Rudy, Favors or Hayward. The Jazz have the potential to have an incredibly solid Core group going forward if Exum takes some big steps forward over the next 2 and a half years. I don't expect much from him this year or next. . . but I think that by year three he's stronger, faster, smarter and more confident and aggressive. I expect him and Gobert to be looked at in the same manner as Durant and Westbrook. Guys who you can build a team around. The only question is what to do with Hayward at that point.
