Kanter traded to OKC

Someone also fill me in on why we're getting excited about free agents because of this move. How has anything changed? Renounce Kanter and we're in the same situation. The only thing we've lost is the ability to use Kanter as a bargaining piece. Buy high (trading Deron) and sell low (for "cap space"?)

Because if you renounce him you get nothing at all? We also cleared Novak off the books for next year. I don't think this is a spectacular move, but I have a hard time seeing how others don't think it helps.

Makes it pretty clear that Kanter was not going to be back next year, regardless of a trade.

Given what we know, I'm not a huge fan of the deal, but I don't think looking in retrospect on what Kanter WAS (third pick) is in any way useful for GMs.

Really good point. It's not like Minnesota isn't going to trade Anthony Bennett for anything they can get just because he was the 1st pick.

The more I learn about the trade the worse it gets. Next year with all the exposure kanter gets in OKC your going to hear talk of most improved player. All kanter has to do in OKC is rebound and he will be considered great.

The only thing he'll be famous for is being a great tank commander for them in two years when Durant leaves.

That doesn't happen until next year, though. Right? That's why it was so important in this trade to clear salary for THIS summer. That allows us to sign a very good player for what will be a reasonable contract in the future.

By the way, I'm pretty "meh" about the trade. I was excited when I thought it was Detroit's pick of this year, but OKC's protected pick in the future isn't too exciting. So to me it all hinges on exactly this issue--which free agent do they pick up in the summer with their cap space. And I'm willing to postpone making a decision on the merits of this trade until after I see that.

A quick rundown of the Jazz cap situation:

Salaries for Gordo, Favs, Burks, Exum, Trey, Hood, Rudy and the 7th pick (at 120% of scale): $48,685,757
Salary of Booker if he's retained (can be bought out for $650k or, as a result, easily moved): $53,460,575

Total with roster charges ($525,093 x 4) without Booker: $50,785,947
Total with roster charges ($525,093 x 3) with Booker: $55,035,854

Projected salary cap: $66.5mm

Cap space without Booker: $15,714,053
Cap space with Booker: $11,464,146

Maximum salary for a player with 0-6 years of service time: ~$15,549,179

So...the Jazz may be able to sign one good free agent IF they choose not to bring over Pleiss or Tomic.

Kanter was really undervalued by most fans on this board. I think he is going to surprise a lot of people with how well he can do with OKC. A post player that has wing shooters will open up the game and actually give him someone to pass to if he gets doubled. Kanter put the Jazz in a tough position, but I think the trade was not good. I would rather roll the dice and try to keep him. Even if we lost him, it would be worth the risk compared to what we got in trade. Hopefully we can get a FA acquisition that propels us forward. Or maybe Tomic is ready to come play.

My guess is his shooting percentages go up, he defense looks better and he averages 2-3 assists a game for the rest of the year.

Simple fact is... Rudy made this happen. Part of the trade is, Rudy gets unleashed for as many minutes as Q want's him to play, with no hurt feelings from the bench.

Except that there was nothing else on the table.

We picked up some minor prospects, a draft asset and a **** ton of capspace by offloading him and Novak.

We can now offer a contract to the 10 or so 3 and D guys that will be on the market. We offer $12 M to Middleton, Matthews, Danny Green I think we can get one of them. It's an overpay now but looks good when the new CBA clicks in. All of those guys fit better than Kanter and are better uses of capspace.

I think Dennis Lindsey could get more out of his trades. We really helped Golden State out and should have gotten a better deal and now we are helping out the Thunder. We traded away a early 2nd round pick in a deep draft for a 2nd round pick in a draft that most likely won't be as deep and also most likely a worse position in the draft.

if you break the trade down then:

Kendrick Perkins should have = a protected 1st round pick from OKC
For Kanter = Grant Jarrett, the rights to Tibor Pleiss, Detroits 2nd round pick???

Seems we could have done better but that's just my opinion
