Max Out Matthews?

I was one of the few Jazz fans who were pissed we let this guy go. The Raja Bell crowd drove me crazy defending the organization but under no circumstances is Matthews worth a MAX contract. I would love having him back on the team but Wes is not a max player.

If you don't understand this, you'll miss a HUGE opportunity this summer:

Giving Matthews a max deal this summer is equivalent to giving him 11 per. If you give Matthews the max, you really aren't giving him the max.

If you don't get this, then you'll be disappointed this summer. We will over pay 1-2 players. But reality is, we won't be overpaying them at all.

I should probably clarify when I said max, I meant like Hayward money, not the veteran max Matthews can get. Kind of forgot they were different numbers. I wouldn't give Matthews 18 million a year, but I would go like 14/15, maybe.

Can Matthews get 18? I thought he only qualified for the Hayward max.

I guess how i feel about "maxing" wes matthews is like this: I cant see the future so i dont know what kind of money we will have to spend in 3 years or so..... but i think that there is a good chance that matthews is the 4th best player on our team in 2 years (and a smaller chance that he is our 5th best player or even 6th best player if burks and exum both get alot better) and i would be pissed if we had to lose one of favors, gobert, hayward, exum (or a alec burks that makes a similar leap to what we saw from gordon) because we couldnt afford them due to matthews contract.

now if we worked it just perfectly with the length of his deal that it would never affect keeping those guys then im all for it. its not my money right? Just doesnt seem smart to pay the 4th best player on your team max money. (even dumber if he is the fifth or sixth best player on the team)

I am with you here Fishonjazz, my biggest problem is Wes isn't a max player and his age. Our young guys Exum(especially him), Hood, and even Gobert are at least two years away from being the players we need them to be. So the age is a little concern because guys can rapidly decline once they hit 30. I would be ok with signing Wes short term at $9-10 million but it all depends on who is available and who we draft. I also want to see Hood play to see if he is a possibility at the SG. I wouldn't not sign him just because we have young talent at the SG with Burks, Hood and Exum. I think you get the best players available and then sort it out. I just don't think you give MAX deals to non Max player regardless of the cap. If Exum and Gobert become the players we hope they are then the Jazz are going to need that cap space.

ok dudes let me tell you something, no way dl will throw all the money to sign matthews when we have already burks, just forget about it

Matthews can get the "same" max that Hayward got - 25% of the current cap space. But they are based on different cap space. Hayward's 25% was based on lower cap space, that's why there is a difference. The max 25% this year is 4 year ~69 million, or about 17.25 per year...

Should we do it?

What else are we going to spend our money on?

Does it affect our ability to keep any of our core?

We should try to sign Wes but MAX contract??? Is this a joke?? Max contract because we have the money?? I am guessing that your the one that goes and spends his paychecks on ninja swords every 2 weeks. That is horrible money management. The Jazz management may be stupid, but they're not that special.

I agree ... Wes will be 29 and has reached his ceiling. Burks could become the better player, especially if his defense improves.

Burks will never be better than Matthews is now. He just doesns't have that defensive mindset. Matthews is elite at 2 of the most important things in basketball: shooting and defending.

Burks is elite at making fancy layups.
