What's new

Max Out Matthews?

A lot of people were talking about it prior to free agency. It was known for sure, but not well known. If you kept up with national writers, you definitely knew about it. Even Locke talked about it a ton.

WSJ first reported that the NBA is seeking to a new TV deal at double the previous rate in July.

Locke went on and on and on and on and on about it. It's why he was adamant that the Jazz would match any offer.

I'm kinda shocked SiroMar needs it to be pop culture before it matters.

Hayward's contract, given his performance the year before, was not well received (even though most accepted it) . Once the new paradigm became more apparent, people began to relax. The general feeling among the fans and media was that Hayward was overpaid. I don't even know what we're debating really.

Nobody thought Hayward and Parsons were max level guys. Everyone knew the cap was going up, and that they would not end up overpaid.

My point is, given the state of contracts at that time, combined with Hayward's level of play, the most reasonable conclusion was that he got overpaid. Now that everyone is being paid more, along with Hayward's improved play, nobody stills think that. Thus, new information changed people's minds.

I agree with your overall point, but everyone knew the cap was going up when Hayward signed. That's why he and Parsons were inked to max deals. Everyone knew when they were signed, that by the end of the deals they would be underpaid.

We all just like to argue.

The real exciting part of this is we're backing up Euros and we have, what, 17 draft picks over the next four seasons?

It is also why Hayward has his option when he has it. He will miss the LeBron/Durrant summer, but he will be a headliner the next summer and get big bucks. It's because he knew the cap was going to skyrocket, and wanted to be the headliner again.

But what does that even mean? Surely Utah is as much a destination as any small-market team. You explained yourself by saying that Utah couldn't sign "superstars", which nobody is disputing. I agree that Utah needs to pay a bit more to compete with the appeal of larger markets, but that isn't much of an issue given the size of the cap space. Dismissing pursuing FAs because "noway they're gonna agree" is not based in reality, and despite what some wanna-be experts on here say, DL isn't pulling one on us when he says he'll try to pursue several big-time FAs. It is a legitimate possibility.
I simply said it sucks to not be a free agent destination (ie, small market team)

I think that's true.
I never said utah can never get free agents. That is obviously not true. I was simply stating that it sucks that utah is not a location that is desirable for free agents.
Nbd

Will free agents come to utah? Sure they will. After they get turned down by 15 other teams

It's amusing how we've all gone from Hayward at $12mm no way in hell to sure hell yeah make it happen for Kawhi at even more $$$. They're pretty similar in value with Hayward probably worth a few more bucks (both then and now). Funny how a few months can change perceptions.

So true.
