Max Out Matthews?

Last summer I was called crazy for wanting to max Matthews out this summer.

I would max out Matthews because of the cap situation. I would love to overpay Matthews and DeMare Carroll. Look at this team:

Exum/Burke
Matthews/Burks
Hayward/DeMare/Hood
Favors/Booker
Gobert/(our pick here: Towns, Okafor, Looney)

That team would compete for the playoffs next year and a title in 3-4 years.

I'm all for maxing out Wes.

It sucks not being a free agent destination

I like this myth. Can you show me when the Jazz had a lot of cap space, and they had trouble finding free agents to sign here? I'd be very interested to see your proof.

Every time Utah has had cap space, they have had very good free agents sign with them. They were burned a couple times by RFA, but the players still signed here. They also were able to get some very good free agents here as well.

So, please, show me a time when Utah had gobs of cap space and walked away with terrible players, or were spurned by free agents.

It's just not true.

I doubt we spend anywhere close to max money on a SG. DL is very comfortable with AB and Hood to go with GH. And Wes is not a max player. Look for a stretch 4 or else a run at a real big name. He might even work on bringing Korver and Sap back to play for Quinn

You do realize that if you bring in a player like Matthews, and give yourself three players who can hit the three, you don't need a stretch 4 anymore? You need five players who can defend. Two players who can take people off the dribble. Three players who can hit threes. Two players who can play in the post.

If you get your three players who can hit threes from your 1, 2, and 3 position, you don't need a stretch 4 anymore. Especially if Favors can hit that 15 ft jump shot. You have all the spacing you need. Toss in that your one guy clogging the middle is a guy that is just bigger, who you can throw the ball up to for an alley oop?

Wes Matthews makes a stretch 4 less of a need.

Favors, Gobert and Hayward will all come up for new contracts. As has been mentioned, $14-$15M won't be max money after 2016. You can conceivably pay Hayward and Gobert $20M each, Favors $18, Matthews $14 and Burks $10M and still be WELL BELOW the luxury tax line of $100M+ adding in other veterans and draft picks to fill out the roster. Exum comes up for a raise just as contracts are set to expire. If he busts out and earns the max, then Jazz deal the contract of Burks or Matthews if they're set to exceed the luxury tax limit. If we were contending at that point, I have a feeling Greg would be willing to exceed it for a year if contracts overlap.

We're also assuming Hayward stays. I hope he does. But we need to give him a reason. Read his blog; he spoke very highly of Gobert. So I'm optimistic. But he also talked about the correlation of being on a winning team and receiving all-star consideration. I think the clock is ticking. Winning needs to start happening next year and the year after.

We make the playoffs next year.

Show me some superstars that have came to utah via free agency.
Not boozer and players like him.
I'm talking superstars

Most cities DON'T have superstars come to them via free agency. Also think we need to define "superstar" vs. just very good all-star.

That's a silly litmus test. There are very few superstars in the league, and most of them very rarely change teams. That's without taking a serious look into whether we've been in a financial and competitive situation that permits such pursuit. You can parctically make the argument that 80% of the league is not FA destination if we use your criteria.

My bad.
You guys are right. Utah is where most all the big name free agents are just chomping at the bit to get to.

I'm almost leaning more toward Carroll than I am toward Matthews. He's a little younger, he has experience with Q, I like him defending 3s more than Matthews, and he'll come with a better price tag.

I've been saying for the past while to try to bring Matthews and Carroll back.

Matthews is a much better player than Carroll. Carroll is a great bench player on a really good team. Matthews is a starter on a really good team. I want both:

Exum/Burke
Matthews/Burks
Hayward/Carroll
Favors/Booker
Gobert/our pick in this draft

That's a damn fine team. If Exum becomes an All-Star. That team competes for titles.
