Official Thread: # Jazz Draft Day 2018 #

Does this sit well with you guys? Selling a 2nd rounder like it was nothing? Are the Millers in money trouble? I think not.

We have all our second rounders plus two owed to us. I haven’t quite figured out our strategy with the second round. People were moving up in the second round with future second rounders and landing decent guys. Someone like KBD could replace Favors. In any case, we traded down and then grabbed Bolomboy, which tells me they must have not valued Bolomboy all that much. Then the year we drafted those two PGs in the second round who never amounted to anything. I also can’t buy that we thought NWG would be more than a camp invite guy, then other years we end up selling the draft pick. But we hold onto those things like they’re assets with value, then dump them for cash when they come due.

Yes agreed. We're all over the place with our 2nd rounders. Guys like NWG I never thought would amount to much. Bolomboy was intriguing, but I would have thought someone like KBD would have been a much better fit for us - why not give him a try?!?!

VERY perplexing.

Posted this on the official 2018 draft page as well.

Allen’s athleticism was tested at the NBA Draft Combine on Thursday, and some of his numbers jumped off the sheets — literally.

Allen posted a lane agility time of 10.31 seconds. According to ESPN draft analyst Jonathon Givony, that’s the fifth-best mark in NBA Combine database history, dating back to 2000. He also had the second-best shuttle run time (3.4 seconds) in the combine and tied for the fourth-highest in both max vertical leap (40.5”) and standing vertical (32.5”) among those who worked out this year.

Strengths: Competitive, sometimes overly so shoorting guard with a pure shooting stroke and solid ability to attack the rim ... Underrated athlete with a 40.5 inch vertical (measured at Combine) ... Was Duke's big late game hero in their last NCAA title three years ago ... What can't be taken away from Allen is his career production and his willingness to sacrifice for his team ... As a player, Allen is a streaky guy who can score points in chunks from the perimeter when he’s dialed in ... At his best he is a knockdown shooter from distance, capable of catching fire. especially if he’s not accounted for ... Looks to maneuver around hard closeouts ... He has the ability to put the ball on the floor and create some offense, and is pretty good at scoring on the move without the ball too ... Solid leaper who is capable of playing above the rim in space, and with adequate body control … Has some good natural ability, and when focused he can shoot well whether stationary or off a screen or curl, and is relatively comfortable creating for himself and his teammates … Pretty decent pick and roll player with a willingness to feed bigs on their way to the rim … Not a selfish player, will put his body on the line on both ends, and is pretty adept at taking charges … Generally puts in good effort on the court, improved his activity level with each passing season … Had to embrace a “villain” persona, assumed a leadership role on a young team in his last season, and there is something to be said about how he adjusted his mindset and role playing with basically a new cast of players in each of his seasons at Duke … A 80+% FT shooter throughout college career ...

At pick 21...I will definitely take it.

I think I said it last week in the other thread when discussing trading away our late second round picks - IMO it has very little to do with being hungry for money or something of that sort. The team is self-sufficient and it both doesn't rely on the Millers right now and the Millers don't rely on it either(as in it was put in a legacy trust) and they don't get any money out of it. IMO they just didn't have a player they believed is worthy of a pick and got cash for it they can use in future instances when they need to get someone they like. For example, when we wanted Gobert, we had zero problem giving up the absolute max we could in order to get that pick.

I just watched a video of Vlade Divac talking about the Marvin Bagley pick. He said he thinks Bagley can play 3, 4 or 5... Lmao. I'm thankful we have DL

He can't play the 3 come on now... and this coming from me of all people so thats saying something.

Luka is going to play some games in SL??!?!?

Awesome but still weird. He needs rest. He hasn't had any rest in the last 18 months.

If these reports about DM being into Allen are true I'm turning the page even more...

I need to remember that the Jazz poured more time into this draft than most and we have some of the best scouting in the league. I do admit he has offensive potential and can score from nearly anywhere on the court. I don't expect an all-star at 21, but he fills a need. I just worry that what some folks call passion, I call immaturity. But if DM is vouching for the kid, than I'll reserve judgment.

Apparently the Hawks GM was part of the Golden State FO when they drafted and developed Curry, and he wanted to emulate that success with Trae Young (Curry Lite) and Huerter (Klay Lite).

So even if we had wanted Huerter I don't think it was easy to trade up ahead of the Hawks to grab him.

And then the Bucks wanted DD, so I guess Allen was the last 'premium' shooter left on the board.

Could have we wanted someone else that went before us - maybe. But maybe the circumstances was such that Allen just happened to fell on our lap - and we had to grab him if we wanted an elite shooter.

I don’t know much about him. Only seen him on YouTube compilations. That said, I keep seeing people throw around that term — elite shooter, premium shooter, so I wanted to see for myself.

Of the players who actually got any sort of real minutes, and shot at least three 3ptrs a game:

he ranked 533rd in the country in 3pt % (.370)
He ranked 312th in true shooting % (.580)
He ranked 407th in effective fg% (.536)

David Locke also had done some analysis on him and pointed out that he “wasn’t really a great shooter”, looking at his percentage of “wide open” vs “contested” shots and how he fared on them, along with other conversions.

The stats say he’s a middle, or even low-middle-tier shooter, and doing so in his 4th college season as a man playing mostly against kids, and with a shorter 3pt line than the nba.

I think if we go into the season expecting him to be an “elite shooter” we may come out disappointed as he faces better defenders and athletes.

If we wanted an elite shooter we should have gone Shamet (love his fit next to Simmons in Philly). Grayson is a shooter, not an elite one.

After SAC got like... a 9th big on their roster in Bagley... can we try to steal Skal before they've completely ruined him? Give them the best second rounder they want...

533rd in the country? Where are you getting these numbers?

Honestly, he may be our best option at this point. They were looking at waiving him last year. Maybe we should start a thread for him.
