If these reports about DM being into Allen are true I'm turning the page even more...

I need to remember that the Jazz poured more time into this draft than most and we have some of the best scouting in the league. I do admit he has offensive potential and can score from nearly anywhere on the court. I don't expect an all-star at 21, but he fills a need. I just worry that what some folks call passion, I call immaturity. But if DM is vouching for the kid, than I'll reserve judgment.

Apparently the Hawks GM was part of the Golden State FO when they drafted and developed Curry, and he wanted to emulate that success with Trae Young (Curry Lite) and Huerter (Klay Lite).

So even if we had wanted Huerter I don't think it was easy to trade up ahead of the Hawks to grab him.

And then the Bucks wanted DD, so I guess Allen was the last 'premium' shooter left on the board.

Could have we wanted someone else that went before us - maybe. But maybe the circumstances was such that Allen just happened to fell on our lap - and we had to grab him if we wanted an elite shooter.

I don’t know much about him. Only seen him on YouTube compilations. That said, I keep seeing people throw around that term — elite shooter, premium shooter, so I wanted to see for myself.

Of the players who actually got any sort of real minutes, and shot at least three 3ptrs a game:

he ranked 533rd in the country in 3pt % (.370)
He ranked 312th in true shooting % (.580)
He ranked 407th in effective fg% (.536)

David Locke also had done some analysis on him and pointed out that he “wasn’t really a great shooter”, looking at his percentage of “wide open” vs “contested” shots and how he fared on them, along with other conversions.

The stats say he’s a middle, or even low-middle-tier shooter, and doing so in his 4th college season as a man playing mostly against kids, and with a shorter 3pt line than the nba.

I think if we go into the season expecting him to be an “elite shooter” we may come out disappointed as he faces better defenders and athletes.

If we wanted an elite shooter we should have gone Shamet (love his fit next to Simmons in Philly). Grayson is a shooter, not an elite one.

Honestly, he may be our best option at this point. They were looking at waiving him last year. Maybe we should start a thread for him.

What a meltdown.

I thought Allen would be ranked lower but apparently teams were trying to trade up for him. I would have been much more happy if we got him at 25-26 but it seems he wouldn't be available there. I am completely happy with the pick and trust DL.

There are times when Locke's "analysis" is suspect. I'm think this is one of those times because it doesn't tell the whole story. Grayson is adept in catch and shoot situations and has a fast enough release that he'll get the shot off before the defense closes on him. He also took plenty of shots a few feet behind the NCAA 3pt line and nailed those at the same clip. His form is good from what I see and he moves well without the ball. More or less, he'll find a niche in the league and he'll be a more efficient shooter with some seasoning. If the Jazz can turn Rick "The Brick" Rubio into an adequate three point shooter, than Grayson will be fine there.

I’m breathing... I’m just smart enough to not blindly trust everything that our FO does... half my comments are sarcastic or hyperbole... not asking to bring in 10 prospects but like maybe use the cash we have and move up and take a flier on someone in the second round... we’ve sold like 3-4 second rounders... gave up 42 to move up a couple spots to take the guy we had to have. We’ve made mistakes... we’ve had some huge effing home runs too. Most of the mistakes I called out at the time.

DL has avoided some mistakes too by being really conservative... if we don’t sign someone this year or next those will be mistakes too.

DL has also hired Quin and helped us set the culture so that has a ton of value. If we had not picked up DM, which was pretty lucky I don’t think our view of DL would be so rosy.

DL is smarter than me I have no doubt about it.... but there have been some times when he does things that aren’t in the best interest of bringing a championship here and makes moves because of financial reasoning or other management directives.

1st piece of the offseason puzzle has dropped and it was a dud... win in FA and I will consider this offseason a success.
