Conley Benched

I think Rudy might really come to play tonight... National TV... some shams video about being DPOY again... I don’t think we get a passive Rudy tonight... oh yeah and his old buddies back in town.

I'm shocked. This is the right move but I never thought Quin would actually do it. Lot of pressure of Royce and Joe now to step up and start playing like they were when we went on that great run and won 19 of 21 games. Obviously everyone needs to play better though, including Rudy and Donovan.

Not only is this the right for the team now, it might be the right thing for the team this summer. I doubt it but this may foolishly cause Conley to want to opt out.

Shams and Tony Jones wrote an article about the move for 'The Athletic'. Basically said the Jazz need Royce in the starting lineup to guard the opponents best perimeter scorer and they also feel like he's their physically toughest player and toughness has been sorely lacking during this 3 game losing streak. They think the move will also give Ingles a more prominent role offensively and allow them to run the pick and roll with him and Rudy more frequently. Conley will still play significant minutes and they hope he and Clarkson can be a potent duo off the bench.

It might prove itself to be an adequate move, but still... I don't think Ingles airballing treys by a couple inches, Royce being blown by and shooting like 28% long balls, Rudy no "go to" move soft hands and easy to hack legs, or Donovan's suspicious ball handling and decision making had much to do with Mike shortcomings.
Of course, I wish I'm just stupid and Quin and our guys prove me wrong and beat the hell out off darn Celts.

In soccer where the coaches are fired much easier than in basketball it happens sometimes that the players clearly underperform to get rid of unwanted coach. I guess in basketball players may also have their ways to force some changes on the coaching staff..

This reasoning is kind of killing me... there isn't just one issue obviously... the data set is clear that the lineups with Royce in for Mike with the starters are so so much better than the current lineup. It gets hard to get to those lineups in game flow if you don't start that way. But there is also some psychology/ripple effects here:

- We know Joe works really well with Rudy and the starters... having him out there has a better chance to get him going and feeds the big fella so it gets Rudy going.
- If Rudy is getting the ball more he is more engaged on defense... in a perfect world he just plays defense and doesn't need this, but we've seen this with other bigs and with Rudy before. Rudy can get fed.
- Royce gets to start and guard the best perimeter guy, which takes a load off of DM and Ingles... DM can now likely hide somewhere and save his energy. These guys aren't robots... it is hard as hell to be really good on both ends of the court with the energy it takes. So now Royce is used more properly and we've lightened the loads of the other guys. Royce needs to be better than he has recently, but has a history of being quite good.

The argument for Mike is that he is a better creator... but that unit doesn't need a lot of creation... and Mike has been the most inefficient creator of those guys. He's a worse spot up shooter than Joe and Royce...

So you push Mike to the bench... he will have a chance to maybe find himself a bit. His creation will help that unit... and his size won't be as big of an issue. You may lose him... but he's already been pretty bad and historically he's an average efficiency scorer... so NBD if you lose him... he's been well below that. He's been nicked up so less minutes isn't a bad thing.

So while this solution isn't the cure all... it has a chance to fix some of our many issues. Its like if you were in a horrible accident and had lots of injuries... treating your head wound won't fix your broken leg, but you should address the head wound right?

I think we get this one either way. If you can’t get up for the Celts on National tv, you can’t get up for anything.

Oh jebus… are we becoming the Knicks... WTF is this... what would have changed? Holy hell we are going full stupid right now. Did we cave to the folks who's main argument is "but he's mike ****ing conley!"

Wut r we doin guis!

Right there with you.

Might’ve resuscitated my interest in this stretch run.
