Mitchell To Sign Max Contract extension

Donovan Mitchell can sign a contract extension with the Utah Jazz this offseason, something Tony Jones of The Athletic expects to happen.

"I can say with confidence that Mitchell loves Utah, has embraced the community and genuinely loves playing for the Jazz," Jones writes. "I can also say that the Jazz have Mitchell under team control for the next (two) years. As a result, worrying about Mitchell’s unrestricted free agency is not worth worrying about..

"Mitchell will sign a max contract extension at some point before next season. That extension will kick in for him in year five, and he will be here for the length of his second contract. Again. Anything can happen. But, I can certainly say with confidence that Mitchell loves it here."

Always nice to see more confirmation, but has anyone with a right mind thought that either side (Jazz or Mitchell) wouldn't go this route after his rookie deal?

I guess this is a thing:

So I'm guessing whoever that McCade P. is does NOT want the Jazz to give Mitchell the max?
No McCades entire point there was that Donovan has a $16.5 million cap hold for the 2020-21 season. If he signs the extension this summer. That cap hold increases to the $33 million erasing $16 million in possible cap space. He just phrased it really stupidly. The dude agrees Donovan deserves the contract just disagrees on timing. The issue is the pros ($16 million cap space) far outweighed the cons (pissing Donovan off). Jazz and Donovan will sign the contract this offseason whenever that is. Which is a great thing.

After Donovan liked this he @ him and clarified that.

Honestly I didn’t actually doubt this as much as some of you think I do. On his live feed the past couple days I’ve also heard him say to a comment telling him to come to the heat “I’m not coming to south beach sorry fam” and people talking about the Knicks in his comments said “why y’all talkin about the Knicks on my feed” Donovan is here for a while and yes if we treat him with the love and respect he deserves along with the Jazz giving him a competent team around him he’s going to stay here even beyond this I think. No I do not actually believe Donovan is dumb enough to put his career in the hands of Dolan. He’s not going to do that.

Ah okay. I just didn't think that because it's pretty much standard protocol now days to keep your player as happy as possible and get them their money as soon as possible. The only way it would even be an option is if the FO broached the subject as with a plan in mind, like saying 'we will offer you the max extension but also here is "Player X" that we can go after (or trade for) with that money difference. We are happy with either let us know what you want' type of thing.

The only way you can do what he’s saying, putting it off a year, is if Donovan were to be 100% on board with it and said that’s what he wanted to do. But he’d also have to risk an injury for a whole season more. It’s just not worth it to him. It’s also not worth it to upset Donovan and have him wait a year. And they’re not going to. Don will get the offer, Don will sign it. And we’ll all rejoice.

Yeah I was just trying to use an example of why and maybe what that other guy was thinking. But like I said and you just said it really wouldn't make sense and not realistic. Best option is just giving the extension day 1, minute 1, second 1.

Title could be a bit clearer as it makes it sound like a done deal.
It basically is doe... he ain’t leaving yet and guys really don’t to the 2-3 dwill extension anymore. He’d be dumb not to sign it they’d be dumb not to offer it and I don’t think either of them are dumb.

Basically, TJ is saying that both sides are motivated to do a max extension this summer. Good deal both ways, obviously.

Honestly it kind of sends a message that if Rudy is going to stay, he’s going to have to make up with Donovan. I honestly wonder when this offseason will even happen.

I am a fan of this move.
