What's new

Semiannual LDS general conference thread (Apr 2020)

Wow, so much today. Elder Holland's talk. Pres. Nelson's talk this morning. The new proclamation. The hosanna shout and Spirit of God song. Then the announcement about temples in Dubai and Shanghai this afternoon.

I never thought I’d see a temple on mainland Communist China and a Muslim country. Unbelievable.

How many members are there even in Dubai? Doesn’t seem to be sensible place to invest that kind of money.
Less than 2,000 but there’s a stake there and some districts around the area that it would serve.

Um, it's the 190th annual general conference, not the semiannual general conference.

Do they normally call it the annual general conference? That seemed like a weird change.

Yeah, they normally call the April conference the "annual conference," and the October conference the "semiannual conference." Has always seemed kind of weird to me. I mean if you're having two conferences per year, they are both semiannual.

The Church was officially recognized there not too long ago, IIRC. Plus, according to President Nelson’s announcement, it was an invitation to build a temple there. Pretty hard to pass on that in that part of the world.

Yeah, if the govt of a middle eastern country approaches you and says "why don't you build a temple here?", I think you have to do it. And that's sort of what it sounded like.

I really enjoyed the conference. It was cool to see the youth speak, and cool to see less than 10 cycle through the room and them sitting 6ft apart tbh.

There were quite a few very quotable lines and stories, very memorable.

I felt a strong confirmation as they read the proclamation. I appreciated the public acknowledgment of the humanity of prior church leaders. It was nice to affirm my long time feelings that they had flaws and despite those flaws were still used by God to lead at the time. I know I’m super flawed and an idiot at times and yet am asked to teach adults, youth, or kids. Don’t think my failings make the message any less valid.

Anyways, I had lots of favorites and at least half were not the regulars.

what is their End game? Why would they go out of their way to promote a Mormon temple?

Money does not have a smell of a fart.
I have never been in Dubai, but as much as i have heard the Dubai and UAE in general are trying to move from an oil producing country to country which gets their income from a multitude of sources including tourism. While being a muslim country de-jure with all its drawbacks and side-(d)effects it tries hard to be country where everybody is welcomed as long as the visitors are not trying to intentionally undermine all the important details of the muslim culture. Everything and everybody is available as long as you have money, connections and accept some limitations.

So why not have a mormon temple if it brings extra tourists who spend money in UAE instead of another country. I guess it is pretty slim chance that well behaving mormons are consuming lot of alcohol and roast a pig at public places and having a LGBT parade at first opportunity.
Somebody with good data mining skill can probably find the number of travellers between SLC and DXB/AUH and determine whether the temple is meant mainly for expats or also for Utah and US based tourists.

I think your bolded part pretty much hits the nail on the head. I don't think it's about money/tourism directly, but about being perceived as a progressive country where all are welcomed. Which certainly impacts a lot of other things (such as business and tourism), indirectly.
