Johnny Juzang hype & appreciation thread

My hot take for season is that we will need this thread.

Focus is on the rookies and sophomores, but for reasons I cant explain... I feel like Johnny will win more minutes than we all think, and look good out there.

LoL .. really?

For real?
Yes. His first game of last season where he played more than 5 minutes was March 4th against the Wizards. From there to the end of season he posted the best net rating of anyone who played 15+ mpg. Jason Preston was the only one who beat Juzang in net rating, but he played just 70 minutes vs Juzang's 363.

He scored 8.5 PPG in 21.4 MPG with 48.1 FG% and 43.8 3P% in those 17 games, in addition to playing solid enough defense to win the plus minus race.

And he has the size to be a good PoA defender, and now that Kris Dunn isnt with us anyone who is projected to be better defending the 1 than Juzang?

I am glad I was wrong about Juzang. I hope he gets some good playing time. It will be difficult for him considering all the young talent that the jazz will have coming in over the next few years.

He better not efff up our top five pick!!
Nah one decent to good perimeter defender doesnt change the floor of a lineup much. He would likely play with Flip + one of our ball dominant guards who are all bad defenders.

I mean I cant imagine how we would get Flip on the court and have that lineup be somewhat successful if the 1-2 guards Flip had to play with were from the pool of Sexton, Keyonte and Clarkson. Those guys take touches away from Flip and defensively it would be a disaster.

on a team with three rookies, three sophomores and a young center on the brink, you don't sign random dleague guy to a contract unless you think he is the second coming of joe ingles.

I think this may be partly why neither Bazely nor Lofton were retained. But I look at Juzang's signing more as a reward for hard work/development within the Jazz's organization than any particularly high expectations for him.

it's a nice thought, but professionally, you don't pass on a million bucks or so as a friendly 'good job' present, and roster spots are also very valuable. i'm hoping for more. then again, i do realize that he might be there as a practice player for the draftee's, which is ok too, as long as he does a good job of it.

This is an indication of how far we have fallen when we are talking about Juzang getting meaningful minutes
I'm afraid I have to disagree with this statement. With the current NBA having a player like Juzang on your bench becomes very important. Players that will come in and not lose your games. He is the kind of player that playoff teams covet. They are very affordable and will not lose you games.

Too early for victory laps, but man did Juzang look the part.

I dont even care about his steaming hot shooting night, but his decission making and passing were on point in addition to being one of our better defenders. The no-look pass to Brice at the end was awesome.

He also constantly relocates on offense to find the soft spots instead of spectating when others have the ball.

Vastly improved stats from year 1 to year 2. Lets see if he has another jump in him. Really just needs to be stronger on defense. But, that's the while team, so hard to say.

A shooter with good size, good aptitude, without lead feet. That cures a lot of problems for a team.
It's the "without lead feet" part that surprises me even more than the shooting part (which I was a bit skeptical of coming out of UCLA). We still need to see it over larger stints, but I thought his lateral movement was going to be his achilles heel. I think he may be proving me wrong.

I thought Juzang was a nice player, but not necessarily one that had the best chance at sticking onto an NBA roster. Being a 3&D role player is typically the pathway for these wings and he wasn’t known for either of those things at UCLA. He was really more of a tough shot maker. To me that signaled more of a great Euro player…but he’s looked good in a smaller role.

We’ve seen some success stories of these types of prospects transition to smaller roles and thrive. Austin Reeves is a guy that comes to mind. He was a heavy ball dominant player at Oklahoma but has really thrived in a different kind of role in the NBA.

Brice and Flip will also have to make this kind of transition.
