Markkanen (4 years @ 46.4 mil) - keep
Kessler (1 year left on rookie contract @ 4.9 mil) - keep
Sexton (1 year @ 19.2 mil) - trade
Clarkson (1 year @ 14.3 mil) - trade
George (2 years left rookie contract @ 4.3 mil) - keep
Filipowski (basically 3 years @ 3 mil) - keep
Collier (3 years left on his rookie contract @ 2.6 mil) - keep
Sensabaugh (2 years left on rookie contract @ 2.7 mil) - keep
Collins (PO for next year @ 26.6 mil) - cut (meaning I hope he opts out) trade if he opts in
Myhailiuk (3 years nonguaranteed @ 3.7 mil) - cut
Juzang (3 years nonguaranteed @ 2.8 mil) - Keep
Williams (3 years rookie contract @ 5.7 mil) - keep
Martin (1 year nonguaranteed @ 8 mil) - Keep
Hendrinks (2 years rookie contract @ 6.1 mil) - Keep
Springer (2 years nonguaranteed @ 2.4 mil) - cut
Harkless (2 way) - Keep 2 way
Potter (2 way, but I think he has used up all his years?) - cut
Tshiebwa (2 way) - keep 2 way
First round pick top 5 - Keep
Pick #21 - keep
Pick #43 - Keep - or stash
Pick #52 - trade or stash

With all that said, it looks like 10 kept with 2 to 3 picks coming in, and 2 or 3 traded or opt out. 2 cut 2 2-way contracts

Collins is a keep for me. His stats were phenomenal for his pay. He was very efficient on offense. His defense needs to pick up but Collins @ $18 million / year feels like a bargain. $27 million feels steep. What about a front loaded extension? Say $30 million this year + $18 million for the next 4 years? Not sure if that is possible but Collins salary next year is meaningless. Collins @ $18 million feels like a steal.

I thought Collins played like a warrior. It would be interesting to see his play in a non-tanking situation.
I would probably try to trade Lauri and Sexton while R&E-ing Collins and maybe playing with his availability for one more year to keep the tank strong. He’s become a nice piece. Hard to find bigs that create real rim pressure with their athleticism AND shoot the ball well.

If you can find a way to keep that around at a discount down the line (when you’re hopefully actually competitive) while keeping Collins whole in the big picture, that’s pretty damn slick.

Kinda tough exercise before we know the lotto results. In a way its nice because with all the draft picks and young players we have a lot of options open. What you do with these guys depends on what direction you want to go.

For this off season I'm assuming that
1) We expect to get a guy in this draft that will be a cornerpiece going forward
2) We expect to tank next year and get a guy in the next draft that will be a cornerpiece going forward
3) We will not tank beyond those two years, but at that point will attempt to shift into a team building mode.

Which means that the priority objectives for the upcoming season are:
1) Still lose as much as possible
2) Keep Markkanen on the roster
3) Develop some of the younger guys
4) "Keep the powder dry" on the war chest so its all available to start trading next year.

To me that would mean
  • You keep Markkanen.
  • You trade Sexton, Clarkson, and Collins to open up minutes, even if you have to take a loss on the trade
  • You maybe look at trading Kessler, George, and Hendricks for future draft assets (I should explain this one more. When we decide to be good, we are going to want to get good in a hurry. We are going to trade a lot of younger guys and draft picks for more established players. I think there is a good chance these guys end up shipped out as part of that. Their rookie scale deals are getting close to an end. The new player potential speculation gambling window is getting smaller on them. Their trade value is probably not going to go up very much from here. If you cash them out for picks, you will have more valuable trade assets to use when the time comes). Which of them you push to trade the most probably depends on who we end up drafting this year.
  • You keep Collier, Filipowski, and Sensabaugh. They don't have as much value right now in a trade for future picks, but will probably be very attractive pieces when you start trying to trade for players.
  • You keep Juzang and Williams, cause Juzang still has a decent shot at increasing his value, and Williams just has zero trade value right now.
  • Everyone else, eh, gotta fill out the roster somehow. Lot of them might end up cut because we'll have to take on some short term mercenary contracts to meet the salary floor.
If this draft doesn't pan out, there's a good chance my #3 assumption above becomes invalid. At that point, if you are planning on committing to more tanking years, you probably need to trade Markkanen.
If we get Flagg, and some miracle trade opens up this offseason that gives us a chance at bringing in a couple all stars with some years left on their contract, we trade anything and anybody to make that happen.

This isn't my "This is what I would like us to do to make the strongest team through the draft" thoughts. Its my "Danny Ainge is in charge so I shouldn't think of anybody on the team as anything but an expendable asset" thoughts.

If you get Harper, you definitely look at trading Keyonte this season packaged with someone else. The 76ers could retool pretty easy trading Embiid or George for Lauri and Keyonte (It's probably george) for this years (if it sticks obviously).

We could get Harper AND Johnson/VJ if that happened

Right now, nobody is off the table, but I’m also not going to throw people away before seeing another year of how they’re developing. Not when it’s likely that another tank season is in the works. I’m certainly not going to sell low just to sell.

Keep - 9 Players being kept
01 - Lauri Markkanen
(4 years @ 46.4 mil) - keep (for now)
02 - Walker Kessler (1 year left on rookie contract @ 4.9 mil) - keep and likely extend
03 - Keyonte George (2 years left rookie contract @ 4.3 mil) - keep
04 - Kyle Filipowski (basically 3 years @ 3 mil) - keep
05 - Isaiah Collier (3 years left on his rookie contract @ 2.6 mil) - keep
06 - Brice Sensabaugh (2 years left on rookie contract @ 2.7 mil) - keep
07 - Cody Williams (3 years rookie contract @ 5.7 mil) - keep
08 - Taylor Hendricks (2 years rookie contract @ 6.1 mil) - Keep
09 - Johnny Juzang (3 years nonguaranteed @ 2.8 mil) - Keep

Additions / 2 Way Players - 3/4 players being added to the active roster
01 - Top 5 1st round pick
- Keep
02 - Pick #21 - keep
03 - Gabriele Procida - Sign to a modest 3 or 4 year deal (similar to Fontecchio)
04 - Pick #43 - Stash, trade or 2-way
05 - Pick #52 - Stash, trade or 2-way
06 - Backup center - Could be Potter, Tshiebwa or a free agent
Xx - Micah Potter - Minimum, non guaranteed deal or let him walk
Xx - Elijah Harkless (2 way) - Keep 2 way
Xx - Oscar Tshiebwa (2 way) - keep 2 way if possible

Cut or Trade - add 1-2 players coming back
01 - John Collins
(PO for next year @ 26.6 mil) - likely to opt in, so trade
02 - Collin Sexton (1 year @ 19.2 mil) - trade (ideally in a consolidation deal with Collins where the Jazz get a really good player or an asset back)
03 - Jordan Clarkson (1 year @ 14.3 mil) - trade if possible, but keep him through the year and let him expire if no deal avails itself
04 - KJ Martin (1 year nonguaranteed @ 8 mil) - Cut and save the money
05 - Svi Myhailiuk (3 years nonguaranteed @ 3.7 mil) - Cut or trade - I’m not opposed to keeping him one more tank season if there’s a roster spot available
06 - Jaden Springer (2 years nonguaranteed @ 2.4 mil) - Cut and move on

Since I doubt the Jazz can trade Clarkson, they start out with 10 roster spots already filled, add three rookies to the roster, and that leaves you with 2 spots available to split between Collins, Sexton, Myhailiuk and whoever they end up bringing back in trades. I’d prefer a consolidation trade where they send 2 or 3 out for one big money guy.

Go into the season with Markkanen, Kessler, Top 5 rookie, George, Collier, Filipowski, Williams, Hendricks, Sensabaugh, Juzang, Clarkson, #21 pick, Procida and then 2 more as of yet unidentified vets who take the roster spots of Collins and Sexton.

All I'm gonna say is that I want to keep Kessler and Sexton the most and want Clarkson gone the most.
Edit: I also still want to keep Hendricks. I have faith

FWIW..

Markkanen (4 years @ 46.4 mil) - Did nothing for me this year... maybe wasn't supposed to? Can't get a bucket on his own. Not a franchise level / that high a salary player. 46 mil / for a good 3 point shooter? Iffy D.
Kessler (1 year left on rookie contract @ 4.9 mil) - Love Kessler. Give him Laurie's $$.
Sexton (1 year @ 19.2 mil) - Sexton is definitely a keeper. Love his infectious effort.
Clarkson (1 year @ 14.3 mil) - trade if possible
George (2 years left rookie contract @ 4.3 mil) - keep, but to me he's the fifth best guard on the roster. Sexton, Collier, Brice, and JC are better.
Filipowski (basically 3 years @ 3 mil) - Love, love, love him.
Collier (3 years left on his rookie contract @ 2.6 mil) - Love, love, love him. Please work on your jumper this summer!
Sensabaugh (2 years left on rookie contract @ 2.7 mil) - Love, love, love him. Please work on your first step this summer!
Collins (PO for next year @ 26.6 mil) - Warrior. Keep over Markkanen.
Myhailiuk (3 years nonguaranteed @ 3.7 mil) - Next year tank? Keep the commander. No? Cut.
Juzang (3 years nonguaranteed @ 2.8 mil) - Cut. Always seems lost. His D picked up towards the end, but no handle, no court awareness, 37% 3.
Williams (3 years rookie contract @ 5.7 mil) - See response for Svi. :smh
Martin (1 year nonguaranteed @ 8 mil) - Keep. Indifferent.
Hendricks (2 years rookie contract @ 6.1 mil) - Gets an "incomplete" this year. Didn't impress much his rookie year.
Springer (2 years nonguaranteed @ 2.4 mil) - cut
Harkless (2 way) - Cut
Potter (2 way) - Love his effort. Good 3 point shooter. Great end of the bench guy
Tshiebwa (2 way) - Love his effort. Good rebounder. Great end of the bench guy
First round pick top 5 - Keep duh
Gabriele Procida - Buh?!

I honestly don't know Ainge's plan is if he even has one. The returning players tanked us to the worst record in the league. Does Ainge want to do it again or is he going to try and win games and if so how hard is he going to try?

I think he’s going to tank. Maybe not as hard as this past year, but hard enough to keep the pick from OKC.

Seems pretty clear from Ryan’s comments and how hungry Danny has been to keep the Favors pick, we will very likely be tanking again next year. Flagg might change that.

Giving up on Lauri is silly. Look, we wanted him to have a bad year. We hoped he would have a bad year. Who knows, perhaps Hardy intentionally put him in bad spots.

Lauri will be fine when we aren't tanking. Period. His salary is very high. But don't confuse a year off with an off year.
