Training Camp 2025

Lowe thinks Lauri is getting traded and DET is his favorite destination. I think it makes a lot of sense.

"I can't imagine a scenario where Lauri Markannen is on the Jazz in a year".

He's made similar comments in the past when I've listened to him. I don't get the feeling he has any specific inside knowledge from the Jazz or Lauri, but just sees the situation as one that doesn't make sense (a near all star player in his prime playing for a team that doesn't look like it can be competitive for a long time).

Personally I can imagine a lot of scenarios where Lauri is on the Jazz in a year, so maybe Lowe just lacks imagination (I'm kidding).

From the outside looking in, it doesn't make much sense for Lauri to be on a tanking team. I get what he's saying. I don't think he's traded, and it's because he doesn't have much value. He can always play his way back into value, but we are setting him up for failure on that front.

Turns out we really screwed ourselves not trading Lauri. I was on the "keep Lauri" wagon so I missed the boat there as well.

In past rebuilds we've always been fortunate enough to have rookie contract players breakout within a year or two. Post Stockton and Malone we had Andrei Kireilenko and then Deron Williams. Post Deron/Booz we had Gobert and Hayward then Mitchell. I think as Jazz fans our expectations have been set to usher in our new era within a few years of a previous era.

Having only 1 rookie contract player that looks like they can be a starting level player (Kessler) and 0 rookie contract players that look like they can be all star level players is a somewhat likely outcome, but an unfamiliar one for us Jazz fans. That said, if Ace looks like the real deal and a few more rookie contract players look like future pieces, there is a chance we could be in a much better place next off season.

I believe the free agent class next year should be much better than this year, plus we won't have any obligations on draft picks to anyone, plus we'll hopefully have another potential impact player from next year's draft. It's very possible, (probably still unlikely), that we are ready to start trying to be good as soon as next year.

Yeah there's no doubt that we mismanaged the Lauri situation. The half tank years were bad, but we still had an out by trading him before last season. We could have still gotten great value for him even if it wasn't the delusional value some around here thought we deserved. If Lauri has a so-so season, he's going to viewed as one of the worst contracts in the league. I actually think he needs a great season just to maintain his value at all. Teams aren't handing out max contracts like candy anymore.

Kessler, Lauri, Ace, Free Agent, Rookie Contract Player, 2026 Rookie, Rookie Contract Player, Free Agent

We need Ace and our 2026 rookie to be good, and 2 out of the 7 other rookie contract players to be rotation level players to have a solid 8 man rotation.

I wonder if there was ever a real package from SAS. I'm still not sad about missing out on anything that was reported from GSW.

I doubt it. One of the challenges with trading for Lauri is that many teams seem to be angling for Giannis. HOU and SAS, for example, have seemed like decent Lauri destinations. While I'd say they are both good fits for him, I don't think either team wants to give up their Giannis dream quite yet.

I'm pretty sad about missing out on the reported package from GSW....and since there's been some debate on what that actually is, I'm going by what Shams said which is "all the picks, but no Podz".
