What's new

Game Thread Nov 02, 2025 04:00PM MT: Utah Jazz @ Charlotte Hornets

Added to Calendar: 11-02-25

Not sure why people are so bummed, this was a needed game.

I hate the tanking and rooting to lose too, but it’s completely necessary. There is not viable plan other than keeping the pick this year. We can blame DL and it sucks that it’s how I remember Favors at this point, but accept it and root for the suck.

After this year it is full steam ahead rooting for our team like normal fans for the foreseeable future, even if we’re mid. But we gotta suck up one more year of this.
The thing is I'd rather tank with the inexperience of Ace/Filip/Brice’s than running with Svi who's not even gonna be on the team next year. This reminds me a lot of Corbin who played Marvin on an expiring contract over the rookie Gobert. I think it costed his job.

It’s impossible to have a bottom three record and not stink.

Any team that looks mostly competent won’t lose nearly enough
Can’t have it both ways.

This Walker thing could be an extended absence. This thing is lingering. Silver lining is we will be awful without him.

if the players feel that the coach is not putting them in a position to win through scheming or lineups or telling the media every game how mad he is at the players its going to effect the effort of the players especially when its a young coach thats record now is 87 wins and 165 losses players might be just saying losing is ok because thats what coach wants

Because it, again, exposed where the Jazz really are.

And that is in the garbage, with a coach who talks a good game but in four years hasn't gotten a single player to play D. And all the assets the Jazz used to have, have been turned into guys that don't make a difference or are complete busts.

The Jazz won't be mid next year and just suck for this season. They will be garbage for several more years, at a minimum, unless they change their players and change the coach. That's the reality.

"I’m sorry but the Jazz should be embarrassed. The Hornets started 3 rookies, were without Ball and Miller, and the game was over by the middle of the second quarter."
They started 3 rooks + 2 vets in Bridges/ Sexton who notoriously are not defenders yet their defense still looked miles ahead of the Jazz.

That should be concerning especially concerning the lack of effort defensively under Hardy for 4 straight years now.

I read that as the jazz need to tank, so they get a star in the draft, so that they won't stink in the future.

Ehh, the Hornets are one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA as well. I think it's pretty clear Nurkic is completely toast and that influences the outcome of last night a lot.

If Jazz hadn't been handcuffed by the OKC pick debt, I'm pretty sure there would have been more emphasize on defensive development. As things stand currently, the best bet is have an awful overall defense . If you werent in this position, it be a bit more okay to end up being say, 5th, 6th or 7th worse instead of aiming for bottom three. Especially with these new odds where jumping up in lottery is a bit more likely. In short: having to tank under the pick debt is extremely harmful for development.

We're probably trading Lauri on ~December 15th so I don't think we need to worry about our guys being too good defensively, lol.

It's some portion of Hardy being a terrible defensive coach and all of our prospects having been terrible defenders in college who aren't progressing.

(Kessler was obviously an elite defender in college, but he was acquired in trade. Out of the 8 guys we drafted, all were bad defensively in college other than Hendricks, who played a completely different position in college and has obviously struggled badly to transition away from center)

While it's true that we've neglected defense in the draft, I think it's equally true that we've neglected BBIQ. That's a really nasty combo. We have some prospects that could be capable of playing defense, but there's really been no defensive development under Hardy. But we don't have guys like Kon who may be physically challenged but at least know what to do and where to be. Hardy even said himself that "defense wasn't his focus" when talking about benching Kessler in year 2. It's a top to bottom failure that causes this performance year after. Players, FO, and coaching staff are all responsible. Bad players, a FO who doesn't prioritize defense, and a coach who can't seem to coach defense either.

Exactly but the Hornets showed effort on that end even with their best 2 way player, Brandon Miller, injured. The effort part is the reason I've barely been able to watch this team the past few years. Maybe it's the OKC pick hanging over their heads but I don't know how they expect to properly develop the young players if they aren't at least held accountable for effort. Hardy comes across as all talk and no action when he bemoans the same issue in his post game pressers.

This is a strange line of thought. I can't imagine Will Hardy and the coaching staff sabotaging the defensive development of the team just to lose more games. What would that even look like? Are they withholding defensive tips and drills? Are they purposefully implementing a bad scheme? More likely they just aren't good at coaching up defense. I lean more towards incompetence vs. willful negligence.
