Ace Bailey ROY watch

Lol.

You are talking regress vs progress here. Its not the same discussion as progress vs progress.

If Key improved his rebounding by +1 RPG Id be equally or even more excited than if Collier did that.

I'm talking about what gets people excited or concerned about a player. That's all relative to how they view the player in the first place.

FWIW, I wasn't replying to anyone in particular with that post, and it wasn't even necessarily supposed to be Ace specific. I was just challenging my assumptions and seeing if I could find data to support a hypothesis.

Also, I absolutely agree that I would have preferred to use FTR, but I couldn't find it on NBA.com where it is extremely easy to sort by experience/etc.

I was just clarifying that my concern with Ace's FTr is not a concern with it not being able to improve. The starting point is just so low.

I have higher hopes than that for him. I would say that should be his floor.
I agree. I was elated we got him because I think/thought the sky was the limit. And, sunk cost fallacy; we put ourselves through hell tanking and right now he looks like the only hope that all of the tanking to this point might yield anything of any value.

This board is weird at times. People are hyping Cody for few random dunks and concerned about Ace for his low FTR.

Meanwhile:
Cody is being dragged down by his truly horrific start to the season. Their stats for the last month are much more comparable and better reflect who they are at the moment. Ace is still markedly better on the offense, no questions about it. On defense Cody currently is much better than Ace, though.

Ace is the 54th among all rookies in the FTA per 36 at 1.3. And I am sure that some other rookies have similar roles to Bailey. Also, there is no other stat where Ace is THAT low (steals, rebounds, assists, blocks)...

The only recent Jazz rookie who had a (barely) lower rate of FT was Hendricks at 1.2. Even Cody in his rookie year shot free throws more frequently...
What is the mean for all rookies per 36?

This is a dumb thing to focus on since he is a 19yr old kid who lacks strength. Give him a couple offseasons to focus on getting stronger before being concerned about his free throw rate.
Good lord shutup. Its not a dumb thing to focus on when he's statsically one of the worst players at it in recent history at it. I get your schtick is you throat any young player, but get a grip.

I don’t think any of us were hoping for a role player after tanking like that. It is only natural to put outcomes in context.

I will certainly take a good role player over something worse.
I get that, but I just dont see star currently. His best attributes are going to be his shooting and athleticism, which we hope the later translates to elite defense.

He can still average an easy 20 as a role player, so I dont mean he will average low PPG his entire career, but I never see go to star who carries a team.

I think the Jazz need that kind of role player (think Mikal Bridges with more athleticism) more than they need a star. Im sure Bridges could be a "star" on a bad/mediocre team, but he's better as a 3rd/4th guy, which is what I see Ace being.

But even as a role player type, he still needs to be at least average at going to the line.

Ace's defensive highs are better than Cody's, but Cody is the most solid when it comes to rotations and generally playing sound defense consistently.

I don't think I can find it on my source, nba.com.

But I also do not understand this obsession with the FTA. Yes, even now, in January, Ace gets fouled and goes to the line just once every two games. But that is because he is able to deliver efficient 15-20 PPG - all on wide open threes, unimpeded drives to the rim and uncontested long twos. This is a reflection of his great skill to get open for easy shots. As he gains more experience, adds weight and improves his handle Bailey will add contested shots to his bag.

After all, all of our best players- Key, Lauri, Kessler, Nurk - were able to significantly increase the amount of FTA just several years after their rookie season. Ace will be fine.

Yes it is. Stop being an *******. He is 19yrs old and playing really well. His biggest issue right now is that he lacks strength and because of that tends to avoid contact.
