Missed Opportunities

Darkwing what were the three first round picks worth that the lakers gave to memphis for pau gasol? Nothing, nada zip. Unless we get lucky those unrestricted first round picks will be mid 20ish.

I don't have a list of tax paying teams. I do know there are tax paying teams and I believe there would have been better options in the future. On day one, five options were available and pissed away (if you add Millsap to my original list) because we signed three losers. More options will come available I'm sure of it.

Well, it was two future first round picks, and one of them averaged 14 points and 9 assists last year, but don't let facts get in the way. And there WAS a Marc Gasol in that trade, too.

oldtimer: you're speculating. a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. you're suggesting the jazz gamble more than lindsey did today with this trade, and i completely disagree with you and i think you're the one panicing.

if anything, the fact that the young guys get to prove themselves alone makes this trade worth it. it's time to see what they can do. 3 years of preparation and waiting have led up to this point. and you want to throw this opportunity away? we have untapped potential and possible failures waiting for us. but we won't know what we have until we see it.

Didn't they end up getting the draft rights to Marc Gasol? It actually turned out well for Memphis.

Going out of town basically now for a couple days. So can't respond to new stuff. :(

Hopefully the final roster will be full when I get back.

Fair enough, bad behavior on my part. But dude... even the other opportunities you directly cite suck. And these other mystery opportunities out there you mention don't actually exist. You realize these contracts the Jazz took on last one year, right? The Jazz essentially agreed to hold another team's crap bag for a season that was already a total tank/growing opportunity for the youngsters and got two 1st round picks and two 2nd round picks. They sacrificed nothing except Greg Miller's money (which I don't care about) and got nicely rewarded for it.

I love it. I love everything about it. And in 2017, when Steph Curry's ankle is long gone, Bogut is 2 years into retirment, and the Warriors have slipped right back into the lottery you are going to love it too.

To me the best part of the trade is we get our cap space back in a year. These are all one year rentals. I agree with that. What scares me is what the Jazz will miss out on in the next year. Your right I don't know what those opportunities are right now I just believe they will exist. As for Curry's ankle and Bogut retirement I agree completely.

yes, Marc was the throw in in the deal. The real prize was the 3 first round picks. All crap. Now which of the three pieces of trash the Jazz picked up today is the next Marc Gasol?

We also get some nice unprotected picks that may or may not be good. Overall, this was a good deal. The Miller family was going to have to shell out a lot of money anyway seeing as how we were below the floor. Why not do this?

Yea but couldn't our young guys prove themselves without destroying our cap space? I mean why do a bad trade just to force Corbin to play the young guys.

Do we know how much they valued him at the time? Not really. Whether you believe he was a throw in or not, he is now one of the best big men in the game.

Some really spectacular threads today. Seriously. Bang up job, gents.

Shows how spoiled Jazz fans are. This is what a rebuild looks like. Get used to it, chumps.

I think spending our cap space on multi year deals for mediocre/over paid players like the ones you mentioned ruins our cap space and hinders our ability to resign our current young players. What if all of them blow up this season. That Mayo or Asik contract would probably keep us from being able to extend one of them.

You're mad because of a possible situation that hasn't even happened and may never happen. The Jazz were presented with an opportunity and they took it. That takes ballzz.

Wahhhh! We want Millsap and Alfred Jeffermom back! We don't want Ricky Jeffermom! Wahh! Expiring contracts and draft picks suck! Wahh!

But at the same time, play the youth!

....Wahhhh!

GS needed to clear cap space NOW to get the FA they wanted before someone else snagged him. This made it the perfect time for the Jazz to sell its cap space. Waiting until the feeding frenzy is over for FAs would have lowered the value of that cap space. The Jazz don't want journeyman players on multi-year contracts messing up future deals, so banking that cap space for a year -- and getting two 1st and 2nd round picks -- was shrewed. And speaking of future deals, what's the chances of the Jazz packaging these assets into a top-10 pick in next year's draft?

What would signing Mayo, Calderon, Copeland and trading for Asik accomplish for the Jazz?

Might give us a chance at the #8 seed and ensure we remain in the 40-45 win range for the next 5 years, until Favors, Hayward, Kanter and Burke start to demand trades.

If they do parlay the assets into a top 10 pick I will be the first to say I was wrong. However, for the next year every time there is trade done with cap space it was a missed opportunity.

Two problems with your argument old timer:

1- GS isn't LA. They were a fringe playoff team last year. They aren't competing for titles. They are an ankle injury from two different players who use their ankle every second of every play from giving us a lottery pick next year.

2- would any of the players listed sign a one year deal with Utah? Then I'm not interested.

signing one of those players by themselves would not be the difference between making the 8th seed and being in the lottery. I think our young guys are good enough to compete for the playoffs. I don't think they make it, but I have a lot of faith in our your guys.

Darkwing: I hope your crystal ball is better than mine. I don't know exactly what players and picks will be available come the trade deadline. I believe the new tax consequences of the CBA are going to force teams to do things they don't want to do and very good players and picks would be available later for teams with cap space.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm sure Lindsey evaluated which teams are facing the tax. For the most part it's teams like Brooklyn and the Lakers, i.e. contenders and teams that are willing to pay the tax. Besides, their picks would be even worse than the ones GS is giving us. And those teams don't really have other assets to trade. The genius of Lindsey's move is he got ALL expiring contracts. And none that will really impact the playing time of our young core. This was a beautiful trade.

I thought old timers were supposed to be smart, seasoned, patient, and reasonable?

Time will tell if I am smart or unreasonable. You cant convince me that getting rid of our valuable cap space for a year is worth 2 picks in the mid 2Os.
