What's new

2011 draft.....

I can't think of one American player I'd want at 6. Knight maybe. I'd rather go the Euro route if only to let them develop overseas and defer their rookie contract until they're more ready to step in.

By contrast, drafting a kid like Jones at 6 is way too high a risk. He's probably 2 years away from playing good minutes, and after year 3 he's a 4 million dollar pickup as an RFA. At 12 I'm much more wide open.

Yeah, in spite of Jones' decent season averages I just wasn't very impressed with what I saw of him in the tourney. I'd prefer to go with Bismack, Valanciunas, or Kanter at 6. Again, this is an extremely hard draft with a lot of risks - every prospect is risk / reward. I could be totally wrong on T.Jones. I miss Harrison Barnes.

It has yet to be seen if Dwill2 can play SF in the NBA yet. Yes, he was able to blow by his man in College, because he had opposing 4's guarding him. If we do get a top 3 pick, I hope we put him through some kind of drills to see if he has the lateral quickness to play the 3.

My point is simply that Williams lacks a true position because of his size and he's unproven at the NBA level. Millsap has had a similar problem, but having two of the same body presents serious defensive issues and minutes issues and how can you cut the known productive one that's given it his all in favor of a kid that could be better... but could also be worse? It's just a hard situation to know how to make the best decision from. Drafting Irving, for example, is a no-brained for a lot of reasons. That's what I'll hold out hope for until I can't

Quick question. I assume it was known around NBA circles that the Jazz really liked Devin Harris. Rumors were that Dallas was trying to trade for Harris so they could make a run at Deron this summer and entice Utah with Harris. Now, if Utah really does like Harris that much, why would they take a pg in this draft? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose in obtaining Harris? Now, I know some will say take BPA but in this draft there really is no BPA. Every single player has upside and downsides. Can you really argue Knight is a more sure pick than Bismack or Burks? They all have a lot of talent and a lot of weaknesses.

Now, if Utah really feels this strongly about Harris, what happens if they get the #1 pick? If I am Utah, I look to trade this pick. You are picking between a pg (where you already feel like you are set at, and also, this isn't a Jordan vs Bowie or Durant vs Oden thing. PG's don't win championships) and a six foot seven PF. I say no thank you. If you end up with the #1 or #2 pick, let some other GM dig their own grave. Ideally would be to trade the #1 pick to Cleveland (who apparently loves Irving) for their pick next year. Toss in the GS pick if you have to. Then at twelve take the BPA which would probably be between Leonard, Burks, or other similar wing. That is what I want to have happen if we win the lottery (unless Williams suddenly measures at six foot nine, or has incredible lateral quickness allowing him to play the three. If Williams tests out at either of those things, then screw what I just said and draft the guy).

Screw another pg and screw a more skilled Millsap. After watching the NBA playoffs this year, a pg or a small PF will not take us to the promised land. We need length, athleticism, and wing scoring. Williams and Irving do not give us any of that.

Flame away.

I disagree with almost everything you said, including the claim that this was going to be a quick question. You honestly believe that if we win the #1 pick we should trade it away for a pick of unknown quality in a future draft, and then even sweeten the deal by giving away a second lottery pick in the process? I'm sure the Cavs would be extatic if you became GM of the Jazz.

Yeah, I agree with you. Throwing in the GS pick probably isn't the best idea. I'd say give 'em CJ, but then they probably demand the second pick. ;)

uhh ya... is anyone else forced to watch Glee with their girlfriend/wife? Didn't know they were doing a basketball skit next.

How about these two kids from Europe...Davis Bertans and Robin Benzing, great shooters and have the build of a Nicolas Batum, maybe not as athletic but better outside shooters, I think they are better then this Jan Vesley kid, thoughts?

There are aren't other 6'7-6'8" wings?

Neither are good let alone great defensive players like Batum was in France.

A guy who plays basketball at my college i work for was a teammate of Betans in Latvia. Says he is indeed a light out shooter, but just signed a contract with his team. of course if the kid and agent were smart that had a buyout written into it. If for some reason we get a late first round pick or second round pick sounds like a reasonable pick.

Also, if we dont go PG at 6. We should look at either drafting, or trading down to draft Reggie Jackson from Boston College. 6'3 PG, 7-0 wingspan good assist #'s and great FG and 3PT %, really athletic. Next Westbrook?

this guy is definitely intriguing. I'd be shocked if he didn't shoot up the draft board simply because of his length.

My initial reaction was to wonder if we could trade CJ for a pick that would nab him.... then I wondered about trading Memo's expiring...

It seems like I go thru this every year: what would it take to pick up a mid- to late-first round pick?
