What's new

*****2013 Training Camp Updates and Discussion Thread*****

The new roster update on NBA.com lists Favors at 263 lbs and Kanter and 248. If this is accurate, Favors needs to play the center position at all times except when Gobert or Biedrins is in.

Haven't said much in a bit, but I will just say that the idea of having five young players as the starting unit does not sound good at all, and I have grown to hate this core4 or core5 idea. Burks is a mediocre player at best right now, and I question his basketball IQ big time. Unless he blows people away in camp, he should come off of the bench when Rush comes back at the three (I don't like Gordon at the 3 because of his crappy rebounding and ability to get pushed around by big 3s like Josh Smith etc.). I would, however, like to see Gobert over Biedrins! A second unit of Jeremy Evans and Rudy Gobert as your 4 and 5 would be fun to watch on D and O.

I'm of the opinion that either Kanter or Favors should be on the floor at all times, assuming they don't get into foul trouble.

Basically this.

I just want burks to get his chance to start just like the rest of the core.

If he fails as a starter, bring him off the bench

Why does Burks have to "fail" as a starter? Why can't the answer simply be that the team plays better if he comes off the bench to help the second unit? I don't understand why everyone is getting worked up over who starts at what position. We're in new territory here -- we have a young team with serious potential at every position. Let's just see how they work out together and HOPE that Corbin gives them the minutes they deserve and substitutes semi-intelligently.

If it doesn't mattet then lets bring hayward off the bench

The only thing I see Burks struggling with is him not having enough offense focused on him. But I still want to see him succeed being a big time player starting. This is what I saw happen with Marvin, there was enough focus on him so he ended up just standing around the three point and line and waiting to shot a poor 3 point shot out of rhythm.

I don't doubt it either. (About Trey)

I'm in the camp of hand him the keys and let him learn, and loved him in college, but the summer league was a huge turn off. I'm really concerned that Trey could bust. I really hope he doesn't though.

I think Trey is a long way from being a bust. Point guard is the hardest position to learn and it may take him a year or two to get it right. My biggest complaint against Deron was that he frequently refused to run an up-tempo offense.

And now we resort to strawmen? I simply reject anyone's argument that a bench player must be a failure as a starter. Personally I would like to see Burks start at pg and have him slide over to the 2 when Burke comes in, but that may not be the best use of the players on this team.

It always surprises me how some Jazz fanz are critical of players based upon summer league. I wasn't a huge Burke fan before the draft and would have been just as happy or even more if the Jazz drafted Schroeder or CJ. They all have weaknesses in his game but how about we give the kid a few years before you label him a bust.

Do you really think Burke isn't going to adjust to the 24 second clock. Besides the fact that the Jazz have always struggled with 24 clock violations because of their style of play. What I want out of Burke is to improve his ability to run the team and look to pass first and then shoot. If he did really learn this from Stockton and can bring it to the court then he will be just what we are looking forward. Burke will struggle so people need to be patient instead of crapping all over the kid.

I will be more disappointed if the Core4 suck wind. I am also looking for Evans to contribute this year. Yea that is right!! I think Evans can be a solid role player off the bench especially if he can keep his confidence up enough to trust his shot.

Iawtp

But it goes both ways. He needs to prove he can play before he is christened the next Stockton.

I recommend listening to today's Ip Off. Locke gives a lot of info/highlights/concerns so far in practices:

https://weareutahjazz.com/lockedonjazz/category/podcasts/

Talks about Gordon being really agressive, Jeremy htting a 3, Favors cattching the ball at free-throw and laying it up w/o dribble, and Trey slowing the team down in a very negative way.

Get ready for the hate.

Why can't the answer simply be that the team plays better if he comes off the bench to help the second unit?

Because he has a long way to go in terms of being a complementary player in good lineups and he won't learn that if he just indulges his innate nature to be The Man. You also hope that the team's best lineup features it's best players and can close games with their best players. If Burks comes off the bench and produces well and does so efficiently but can't play off the ball and/or has a drop-off in scoring ability against better competition, then it's a hard sell to say that he deserves to be in those best and/or closing lineups.

I just find it funny how people always bring up manu and harden as why this should happen.

For every example of teams that bring one of thier best players off the bench, there are way more that don't subscribe to this philosophy.

Most teams start and give majority of minutes to thier best players.

Miami, memphis, houston, golden state, portland, indiana, chicago, lakers etc etc.

I mean think of how wade needs the ball in his hands.... wouldn't he just be awesome with the second unit!?

Also as far as manu goes..... maybe he, individually, just plays better off the bench and that is why he is a sixth man.... not neccessarily because its better for the team. (Some players like to watch from the bench to get thier "feel" for the game before coming in)

As far as harden goes..... okc probably should have been starting him instead of sefalosha and maybe they would have known just how awesome he is and would have re-signed him instead of ibaka and maybe have a title right now. (Lots of maybes and what ifs I know)
