What's new

2014 College Football

I understand that entirely. Every game played should have a direct effect on how they make their determination. I just don't think a title game necessarily gets a big 12 team in. Clearly, the committee doesn't believe TCU or Baylor are one of the top 4 teams, so one of them winning a conference championship would automatically change their mind? That's what it seems is being argued here

I disagree. The TCU/Baylor game was a real barn burner of a game. TCU gave up that 21 point lead in the 4th to lose by 3. Baylor went on to lose to WV. Without the committee really getting another shot to see those teams in a possible title game, they were penalized big time. TCU which did nothing but win by 52 yesterday dropped from 3rd to 6th. It comes down to the conference championships mattering. The BIG 12 needs a conference championship to avoid this type of situation in the future.

So they play again and both look like ****. You act as if the winner automatically goes to the playoff. I disagree with that notion.

Who is to say they would play like ****? They don't automatically get put in due to that conference championship. I will admit that. If they played like **** then yeah, maybe Ohio State still slips in. But again, say they do play and TCU(3) beats Baylor(6), do you believe that Ohio State jumps TCU? Or how about the reverse? Baylor(6) again beats TCU(3)... My point is that one of those teams is very likely in the playoff rather than watching as they are going to be now. Further proving how important a conference championship is to the committee.

Okay, so all I'm getting is that the majority of folks feel like picking the four best teams is a secondary goal for the committee? That would be disappointing if true.

Stop bitching.

Big 12? Time to put your big boy pants on and play a conference championship game. Everyone else is putting their reputations on the line. The Pac 12 could have stayed at 10 and Oregon could have ended their season playing a dumpster fire like Oregon St. Instead, they put their season on the line and dismantled a very good Arizona team (who just 2 weeks ago dismantled a very good Utah team). Sorry, but these teams who risk their seasons to play a tough conference championship game rather than good high school teams deserve to go ahead of Big 12 teams.

Baylor and TCU? Cowboy up next time and play a conference championship.

I think the committee wants more to go on to make that final decision. Not having a conference championship game sealed TCU and Baylor's fate here. I think there is an argument to be made that both TCU and Baylor are more deserving of the title of being the 4th best team in the nation. The committee did not like the idea of settling that argument while penalizing Ohio State for clobbering another ranked foe in a conference championship game so they rewarded Ohio State and let TCU and Baylor watch the playoff from home. Whether you like that outcome or not, I think it proves that these conference championship games are important.

They are going to need to expand to 2 more teams or get a special waiver to play in that conference championship game in years to come. Which is good news for a team like BYU if they can come to the table humble and ready to concede the things they can. I would guess the BIG 12 would prefer expansion over a special waiver. I guess we'll see.

Not very happy with Utah landing in the Vegas Bowl vs Colorado State. Not that Utah is "too good" to play CSU, but I don't like the fact that lower ranked Washington is playing in the Cactus Bowl against a Big12 school (OK State).

Same. All we can do now is hopefully put the smack down on CSU and that will be that. Was disappointed about The Vegas Bowl too.

The Big 12 commissioner says the conference will reconsider how to declare its champion after being left out of the four-team college football playoff.

In a phone interview on the College Football Playoff Selection Show, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby told ESPN's Rece Davis: "It's clear that we were penalized for not having a postseason championship game. It would have been nice to have been told that ahead of time."

"We have to weigh whether this is substantial enough to add institutions. ... It's certainly a major consideration."
