What's new

2015-2016 season, what do the Jazz need to make an impact?

Ill try to be succinct but it'll be tough to do so to have a complete answer.

1a. Individual improvement from our young core--Gobert, Favors, Burks, Exum, Hood, Burke, even Hayward and Kanter if he's back.
1b. To piggyback, very strong improvement from Burke and Exum. Our pg play has to get better.
2. An improved bench as Cy stated--we need to go a solid 9 deep--right now we have 3 good players (Hayward, Favors, Gobert), two who are hurt (Burks, Hood) and essentially useless, and three who need to get their **** together (Exum, Kanter and to a lesser degree because he's progressing, Burke)...what do we go currently? Five deep I guess if we count Kanter and Burke, six if you count Exum. Add a solid vet for leadership who doesn't need a lot of playing time. I'd like someone tough and defensive-minded. Joe Ingles is nice but he pretty much stinks.
3. A solid 3 and D guy via the draft. I lean Stanley Johnson now.

Burke-Exum
Hayward-Burks
Johnson-Hood
Favors
Gobert-Kanter

That's a good team if Burke and Exum really improve.

As indicated over and over.

Better PG play
Deeper bench
A scoring threat from the opposite wing position form Hayward.

I do not think that Burke and Kanter will be with the Jazz to much longer. They are the odd men out. Especially Kanter.

This rebuild process has been proven a failure, time for Jazz Rebuild 2.0
Keepers: Favors, Gobert, Burks and Exum (too early to determine whether if he's a bust or not).
Valuable trade assets: Kanter+Gordo for a high 1st round pick+backup/mentor PG and/or a DMC type of player.
Find a reliable big man to come off the bench as well.

Rebuilding around Gobert could be the most exciting!

---Usually like your posts, but this is horrendous advice IMHO. Hayward is worth 3 Burks, is top five on ISO's in the league, and is, if not exemplary at, at least adequate at all aspects of the game of basketball. Look at the players at his position, and tell me who we could possibly get even close to his talent level. He's our best player, period, and his impact on the game is quantifiable.

---I am absolutely obsessed with Gobert, but he has a lot of work to do at scoring the ball. I can't think of a single team (outside of maybe Bill Russell's teams) that built around a stalwart defensive player only. You have to have lots of weapons, and Hayward and Favors are more or less set on this team, because there's little else better that you could get for them realistically.

I guess it depends on what you think an "impact" would be, but I'd define it as making a legit run at the playoffs. It may feel like we're a ways off, but I feel like if we just had the right click in the system things could really start going our way. Favors/Hayward/Gobert just need to keep doing what they're doing, if Favors and Hay are just as good next year and Gobert keeps improving that trio will be fantastic. I still want that super leader that can bring everyone together, maybe it's Exum or not, but I think we still need to find it to get to that next level. If the current big 3 stay healthy for next year I see us at least in the fringe playoff discussion.

Oh and get some players who can hit an effin 3.

Oh yeah, over $14 Mill to be more precise...

Haywards stats are better this year than AKs first year of max contract and AK went downhill from there. He is carrying the team which AK never did after getting his max contract.

GP GS MIN FGM-A FG% 3PM-A 3P% FTM-A FT% OR DR REB AST BLK STL PF TO PTS
41 41 35.1 6.3-14.0 .452 1.6-4.4 .374 4.6-5.7 .815 0.4 4.3 4.7 4.1 0.4 1.3 2.0 2.6 19.0
69 63 37.7 4.9-10.6 .460 0.5-1.7 .308 5.0-7.2 .699 2.3 5.7 8.0 4.3 3.2 1.5 2.3 2.9 15.3
You think Hayward is going to dip to these numbers next year like AK did?
70 70 29.3 2.8-6.0 .471 0.2-1.1 .213 2.5-3.4 .728 1.3 3.4 4.7 2.9 2.1 1.1 2.5 1.9 8.3

Its not that AK was not good enough for his max contract at that start its that the team expected him to get better and he got worse, arguably every year he got worse. Hayward has improved this year from last year. I expect him to improve again next year but even if he plays at this same level next year and the rest of the contract he has earned his contract. Hayward is worth 14 mil this year and almost every team (maybe all of them) in the NBA would take him for 14 mil.

-I don't understand this illogical under-appreciation of Hayward. There are a few players that have contracts that do not reflect their skill, e.g., Steph Curry. These are rare contracts, and the teams that have them better hope that the player doesn't hold any ill-will come resign time. So, if you don't like Hayward because he is "overpaid", then think about a player that we should have with as good a contract. His "Max" deal is not that of Lebron, Melo, Durant, D. Rose etc. He makes 15-17 mil. over 4 years, and this will be standard after the next couple of salary caps. Look at where he stands compared to many others above him: https://hoopshype.com/salaries.htm.

--Hayward is a top 6 SF and a top 12 wing. He's not a superstar/perennial allstar (there are about 5 or 6 of these for wings), but he is damn well worth his contract.

--AK and Hayward are very different players, and AK's contract was much more debilitating compared to Hayward's.

--I understand not liking players, but to assert that a player isn't worth his contract requires solid evidence to be given any credence.

Upcoming FA class is very underwhelming - only realistic options that I like are DMC and Wes Matthews. Maybe Kevin Seraphin if Kanter won't except a back-up role and under 9 mil. I also like Amir Johnson but I doubt he'd come to Utah to take a reserve role behind Favors/Gobert.

Possibly replace Jeremy Evans with Luke Babbitt.

Would love Danny Green but something tells me he'll be the most overpaid FA of 2015

And I'd be careful with Tobias Harris - I think someone is going to throw him a **** ton of money and he'll end up sucking

How about Boozer as a 6th man?

Would be great team, but I dont think we can get Matthews and DMC. Even if we could I think we would have to overpay a lot for them. I dont think Matthews wants to come back to Utah at all, he seemed pretty bitter about how Utah handled his free agency. I also think DMC was bugged that Utah did not even try to keep him, but maybe he comes back because he likes Snyder.

LOVE this team, but I think Burks doesn't stick if we sign Matthews... and I'm cool with that, personally. I think, without the season-ending injury, he'd be as unlikely to be here in 2015-16 as Kanter, and probably less likely to be here than Trey.
