2015-2016 season, what do the Jazz need to make an impact?

Would be great team, but I dont think we can get Matthews and DMC. Even if we could I think we would have to overpay a lot for them. I dont think Matthews wants to come back to Utah at all, he seemed pretty bitter about how Utah handled his free agency. I also think DMC was bugged that Utah did not even try to keep him, but maybe he comes back because he likes Snyder.

Even if they do not come i would like to see the Jazz FO make a push this offseason. Develop our current guys all this year. Then swing for the fences in the draft and free agency. Next year you want to be decidely better in the W/L column. I'm fine with a retread of last year one more time. But I do not want to see the Jazz in the lotto year after year. IMO, the time to make a move is this offseason.

I agree I would like to see the team switch from asset acquiring to spending some of those to make a team built to win, with our core guys.

I'd essentially sacrifice Kanter for DMC and Matthews.

As for affording one or both...are you jsut saying this or do you have cap numbers and what that tell you this?

The Jazz gutted their bench this year on purpose so we could draft near the top of the lottery. I think the Jazz have been focused on evaluating their talent and seeing who is improving. They have decent talent at every position (assuming Exum will pan out), and now they'll pick BPA in the draft. They can rebuild the bench with a few smaller trades or journeymen over the next couple of years.

Keepers: Gobert, Favors, Hayward, Exum, Burks (at least for now)

Expendable: Burke, Kanter, Ingles, Booker, Clark, Evans

This rebuild process has been proven a failure, time for Jazz Rebuild 2.0

Valuable trade assets: Kanter+Gordo for a high 1st round pick+backup/mentor PG and/or a DMC type of player.

I think that we are going to resign Kanter. We are still a year or two away from making Srs moves in FA or through trades. There will be plenty of side stuff going on, bench guys, but we won't make any splashes just yet.

Wow...as I said above, I was preparing a response to Jamezz' post and I was going to provide a list similar to yours. I wouldn't say Utah "gutted" their bench. They went with some promising youth and just haven't gotten the production they may have hoped for. They brought in Booker and he's been solid. Exum, IMO, has contributed even less than what we had thought. Gobert has been a monster, but all that does is make up for Kanter's disappearing act. Hood, even when healthy, was not giving the Jazz any outside shooting. And for whatever reason, Murry just didn't work out. Heading into the season, I thought the bench would be decent, but inexperienced. I was expecting a pick in the 10-14 range. Now, with injuries, the continued struggles of Exum and the clueless Kanter, I think Utah ends up 6-8. But that's ok. Instead of another backup, the Jazz can get a future starter.

The most important things to come out of this season: 1) the institution of actual offensive and defensive schemes; 2) the revelation of Gobert. Having Rudy emerge has changed EVERYTHING! Jazz MIGHT re-sign Enes. I'm not sure. Worst scenario would be for Enes to pull a Monroe and come back for just the QO. Then Utah wastes another season of him taking minutes, only to see him likely leave as a free agent. Jazz need to extend the QO, then actively engage in free agent conversations with anyone that could really help this team. Utah can, IINM, rescind the QO before contracts can officially be signed on July 10th.

I could be wrong, but I think it was just the opposite. I remember he had great things to say about Utah and even expressed amazement at his contract and that he understand Utah not matching. He's likely not coming back...why would you leave a team like Portland? But it won't be for that reason.

There is no way we could get Matthews and DMC. It would take dumping some contracts (Enes and Booker) AND renouncing our exceptions, including the non tax-payer MLE, to sign a max player. After that, Utah would have only the room exception to offer, which is $2.7M, I believe.

The ONLY significant free agent I think Utah has a chance at is DMC. It would require the MLE and a promise of starting. That moves GH back to SG, with Burks off the bench. Not sure I like moving Gordon to SG. BUt even IF DMC misses Quin, why would he leave the best team in the EC to come to one that will struggle to make the playoffs? Atlanta will reward both Millsap and DMC with very nice shiny new contracts.

Of course DL will have conversations with all their agents. And then we'll hear cries of "fire Lindsey" when he fails to get any of them to come to Utah. But the key here is to also remember what happens in three years. Yes, I know the cap and tax go up, but we'll also face a situation of having to pay Hayward, Favors and Gobert $20M each. And they'll rightfully deserve those contracts. Exum, or another PG will need to be paid shortly after that. Maybe Alec can be replaced with a rookie making less. But it still makes it almost impossible to have a fourth player at $15M (and then keep Dante). Millers might step into the tax one year, but they will never be repeat offenders; that's just too expensive under the CBA.
