Due to value or fit, our core is Mitchell, Ingles, Gobert, Korver, O'Neale and Crowder. The other guys should be expendable for the right upgrades.

I'm not trying to defend Rubio, but it's going to be difficult to upgrade from him in the trade market. He's an excellent ball mover, he's making a few 3s again, and he even attacked the rim with some layups the last couple of games. Jazz are starting to play much better team defense, which helps Rubio. I don't think the Jazz want to pay a lot for Terry Rozier. I don't think they want D'Angelo Russell. There just aren't a lot of guys on the market.

If NOLA blows things up, maybe J'Rue Holiday comes available. He's not cheap either. Yeah, Spencer Dinwiddie is interesting, but is he seen as a starter on a championship-competitive team? Not sure.

I agree, but we have to try right? My biggest fear is that we don't do anything before the deadline. If we do nothing now, I have every expectation that we just pick up Favors' option and re-sign Rubio because we either feel like we can't do better or we simply try not to do better. By the time we hit 2020, Mitchell will be established yet Crowder, Korver, Ingles and Gobert are either gone or going to start to plummet.

We are too good and have too much potential to just cross our fingers and hope that Rubio plays awesome.

I think the Jazz are going to approach the trade deadline the way they approached free agency. They'll try to hit a home run (like inquiring about Paul George in free agency), and if that doesn't work they may stand pat. If they can get a versatile forward who is better than Jae Crowder, and they don't have to give up much to get him, then sure.

I think they're asking themselves how much they like Otto Porter. You can start Otto Porter, move Crowder to the bench and trade out Sefalosha. That's an improvement, but is it enough of an improvement that the Jazz would also be willing to give up Derrick Favors? Last night is the perfect example of why the Jazz haven't traded Favors. He fits both the offense and the defensive identity of the team at the 5, and he had a huge impact last night when Rudy was ejected. Having a willing guy come off the bench and put up 24/10 is huge in the playoffs. He knows the Jazz system well now, and the Jazz players really like and respect him.

The Jazz should look to do a deal, but it's got to be the right deal. They're a solid team top to bottom right now, and they're probably still a top 4 or 5 team in the west along with GSW, OKC and Denver. To really improve, they need to add a near All Star-caliber player.

I don't put a ton of stock in PER. I mean, this year Neto has the third best PER on our team, but do we actually believe he's been our third best player? Do we want him playing more minutes? The answer to both of those questions is obviously no. I also don't really care if Exum and Sefelosha were top 5 in PER last year, they clearly weren't 2 of our 5 best or most important players. I think PER is an overrated stat.

It is over rated but that lineup also blew other teams away on the court together.

I go back and forth on Ricky. I think I’d be more comfortable with someone that could shoot but if we added a shooter at the PF spot he makes sense.

If we got Ricky on a team friendly deal that might be the best value we can get at the position but I would want some variance behind him... like a Dinwiddie. I’m not sure you could get buy in from two guys to do less than they are individually capable of in support of the team... I think Ricky would do it and I think his market will be really limited. I am fine with him walking if he got an offer too rich for our blood.

I just think Ricky and Exum isn’t a great long term mix. I’d have to factor in price when determining which I’d rather keep.

Rubio is a good player to have if everyone else on the floor can score and create a bit. It's like Rondo with the Celtics. It worked because he was moving the ball around when the other players on the floor were studs like Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. So Rondo could focus on defending and making reads.

If Rubio's your PG, everyone else needs to be able to shoot and do something with the ball. You can't play him with offensively limited guys like Exum, Royce, Sefalosha and other guys who don't space the floor.

So it's an either-or proposition. You either build around Rubio or go a different direction. And if we're being honest, it's about not having Rubio, Gobert and Favors on the floor together. Replace Favors with Crowder, and it works better. Bring in Korver to pull another defender out 27 feet and it works better.

We should be looking to upgrade at one of the forward spots, so we can bring Crowder or Ingles (probably Crowder) off the bench. But we need to do it without mortgaging the future and wrecking what we already have.

Exum isn't qualified to be a starting PG on a good team. He's a back-up, sparkplug type like a Leandro Barbosa, except that he's also a versatile switchable defender.
