2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

I'm reading how Conley would be enough to keep winning even if injuries strike the Jazz. I just want to remind people that after a 12-5 start the Conley-led Grizzlies are on a 9-28 run. Can anyone explain what happened over there? They are healthy and they've got Gasol and JJJ. Every game against them was a pain in the butt, but they keep losing.

Gasol is not the player he used to be. He's an old school center playing a new, speeded up NBA game and it just doesn't fit him as well. Not saying that he's not good because he is, just not what he used to be.

Saric is supposedly available. I like him but not sure what has happened to him this year. If it was just a first I’d be interested. He was never a great fit with Towns but he also struggled in Philly this year.

I know a lot of people are against a player like LaVine but... I was reading an article on da Windy City and they were proposing trades to teams such as the nets for carrol and a first or Portland for garbage and a first. If Pistons win the Conley chase and Portland scoops up Mirotic with their first does anyone think the jazz would even consider offering for LaVine? The bulls are interested in Rubio already...
Rubio, Allen, and a first for LaVine and start DM at the 1.

Lavine on offense: incredible potential.
Lavine on defense: think Grayson Allen. The kind of defense that loses you games, from a veteran, at 20M/year.
I don't see QS wanting him, but I've been horribly wrong before.

We could use an exception and a first to go after Saric. Doubt they want to trade him within the division though.

And supposedly, they want a 1st and a player. Not really sure what Minnesota has in mind in terms of that player. They would love to dump Dieng or Teague, but Saric can't make that happen.

I don’t have it in front of me but over the last day or two someone asked Tony Jones is the Jazz had interest in Lavine. He responded with a firm “no”

The Athletic Chicago on Parker and Lavine months ago:
"The question that immediately arose after the Bulls signed Jabari Parker and re-upped with Zach LaVine in free agency was how this team could possibly be expected to guard anyone when they’re both on the floor. LaVine and Parker have been considered to be among the worst defenders at their position, and the notion of playing them together didn’t seem to make much sense. [...]

LaVine

LaVine also doesn’t seem to understand defensive rotations. He is very late to communicate switches, often resulting in uncontested dunks or open 3s for opposing teams. He is a chronic over-helper, needlessly leaving his man open to double or triple-team the ball. He is very slow in seeing where he needs to rotate, and he compounds the problem with casual closeouts on open shooters.
LaVine’s worst habit is lagging back in transition defense. When things don’t go his way on offense, he will mentally give up on plays and concede great shots for opponents on the other end.
Parker
Parker faces many of the same defensive issues that plague LaVine. His defensive effort is very poor, especially in transition. He habitually jogs to the middle of the court, not really matching up with anyone.

Parker’s rotations are nonexistent. If he sees an open 3-point shooter, he often won’t even bother trying to run out and contest the shot. That attitude of quitting on possessions extends to every aspect of his defense. Coaches like to reference the necessity of making multiple efforts on a defensive play. But if Parker makes a mistake, he will quit rather than trying to get himself back into the action.

There is more hope for LaVine than Parker because of LaVine’s excellent athleticism. Parker simply lacks the tools to defend against quicker players. Compound that with poor effort, and there’s not much hope for him getting better. [...]"

Months later the Bulls are terrible and both are on the block. I guess the Bulls decided they are a lost cause.

Zach Lavine is a perfect opportunity for a 3 team trade. Chicago gets Rubio and some kind of draft compensation from a 3rd team, the 3rd team gets Lavine, and we get something we like.

This a really good article. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sl...7/utah-jazz-dennis-lindsey-nba-trade-deadline

"What if you go into free agency and strike out, you’ll be wasting a year of prime Rudy and rookie-contract Donovan. That is obviously less than ideal. If you go get a guy like Mike Conley and believe he can be that guy, you’re guaranteeing yourself at least the opportunity of maximizing the opportunity at hand. If it doesn’t work out, you have a TON of money coming off the books to extend Rudy and Donovan and give it another shot. Trying and failing for a couple years might sound a whole lot better than waiting and flopping."

I can’t wait for Boston to lose Kyrie and have put Tatum and Brown In so many trade offers they get pissed and demand out... Hayward and Mid 30s Horford will be fun for the Celtics fans to enjoy... couldn’t happen to a more likeable fan base.

Seriously Ainge begging NO to wait so he can move Tatum for AD who clearly doesn’t want to go there would piss me off if I were him.

The best part of the Pelicans screwing around with the Lakers is that they are simultaneously able to screw with LeBron as well. If the trade doesn't happen, LeBron gets to run the rest of this year and maybe next with an entire team of dudes that know he wanted them gone. At least in Cleveland he had some favorites, here he placed every single player on the block and was willing to send them to NBA purgatory. None of them would have got to play with the Brow. I'm pretty sure whatever investment they had wth LeBron's Legacy is shot.

And they still have to deal with LaVar. Makes me happy.

The paragraph pretty much sums up how I have felt about the idea of Conley on the Jazz since the rumor came up. I don't know if he actually puts us over the top. I tend to think that he doesn't. However in the grand scheme of things even if it's a flop it doesn't hurt us very bad. Seems to be worth the gamble if the price to get a deal done isn't too high imo.

What's the consensus on how Boston lands AD as far as salary? Horford or Hayward?

Boston or LA is getting him. I wouldn't be doing victory laps so soon.

I mean it seems kind of clear that LA ISN'T happening, they really can't offer any more. And AD doesn't want Boston. So where does that leave us? If I had to bet, I'd say the Knicks. They can give all kinds of picks and a few promising youngsters. Why would NO want last year's Lakers? I'd take the uncertainty behind door number 2.

I’ve mentioned elsewhere that he seems like a great rehabilitation project. His stock has got to be low right now. Definitely intriguing.

Would it be possible to trade Grayson Allen to the Wizards for Satoransky and a 1st (the Wizards would have a tough time signing him) and if the Lakers/Pels deal goes through we give them 2 2nd rounders for Mirotic to clear the logjam they will have with players?
