2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

I think you are wrong on the favors thing but am too lazy to look it up.

Why would Jabari block any trade to a team that would play him? He’s out of the rotation... if he stays there they aren’t picking it up and his value will continue to be nothing if he doesn’t play. If he threatened to block it any team will be completely out... I’m not sure he’s the brightest most self aware guy but I think he’s be smart enough to connect those dots.

Favors' contract is a non-guaranteed contract in the second year.
Jabari's contract is a team option contract in the second year.

On your question - in short - because he thinks the Jazz(or some team in the league) will be willing to do it if it came down to it. NOP didn't want to guarantee Mirotic' contract either at the beginning... but at the end they agreed. No team wants to guarantee 20M a year if they don't have to... and no player/agent wants to give up 20M guaranteed if they don't have to. At the end it will come down to who blinks first. Jabari is in a weaker position than Mirotic was last year, but he can still play leverage game with a team if that team is willing to give up value for him.

It is worse for Jabari to stay in Chicago and rot than it is to go to another team and play although they might not pick up his contract for 2019/20. His reputation takes a massive hit if he refuses a trade unless the other team picks up his 2nd year.

If I were a team, I would only trade for him with the understanding that he has to earn that contract for the next year.

It's not this simple. In a similar way you could have asked "wouldn't it better for Mirotic to play for a playoff team instead of for the horrible Chicago?". Yes it would, but it doesn't mean he has to give up his leverage when/if he has it.

Niko, though not starting or playing in crunch because of the tank, was viewed positively and on an upward trend. Jabari has gone from being a #2 pick that his team gave up on, to getting one offer with a tanking team, to getting benched, to being totally out of the rotation, plus some attitude issues. Niko would have hit the summer market with value, so he wanted to push to going somewhere that would be a good fit. Completely different.

I think Jabari's value is diminished enough that we could/should get a pick back in a Jabari/Favors trade if that were to happen.

Anytime there is a NBA player who is also a Mormon you have to give them real serious consideration due to Cultural fit. Those Jazz fans that live overseas are just Not going to understand.

Poor Washington. This move only fixed a small chemistry issue and offered some salary relief. It didn't fix their main issues. They gotta a lot of work to do or will be waiting for the Wall or Beal contracts to expire.

I don't know the rules, can Washington move Ariza again this season?

Ariza is a more reliable player and may be better at defending 4s. Given their salary situation, they weren't going to be able to pay Oubre.

Mirotic and Jabari's contracts are the same(just different numbers) - they are 1 year contracts + 1 year team option. Favors' contract is different. It's 2 years contract with the second year non-guaranteed. The reason Jabari(and Mirotic last year) have the right to veto is because players have the right to veto trades during a 1 year contract. Favors cannot do that because technically his contract is 2 years, not 1... just the second year is not guaranteed(another stroke of genius from DL).

I know that part I don’t think they are viewed differently by the cba. I think it’s a one year deal for bird right purposes because it’s only guaranteed one year. I think I read it somewhere too... I could be wrong but I think they are viewed the same.
