Look, stop gaps and incremental improvements won't cut it. Organic growth won't cut it. Adding 3rd tier players that are 80% of the 2nd tier player we really "want" won't cut it. Another year standing pat, hoping for "development" or "organic growth" won't cut it. With multi-all-star teams dominating the league, and us with 2 borderline all-stars, we need a proven top tier player if we're serious about competing. But we've been "that guy" away from competing for years, and DL likes to play it conservatively. They seem to be happy with mediocrity and fielding a team that's fun to watch to keep butts in the seats, while never really having a shot at the chip. They need to take a big swing or we'll waste Rudy's prime years. They need to make a big move, even if it fails, because no risk no reward. Otherwise we might as well accept our perennial position as a fun team that sometimes makes the 2nd round of the playoffs and yet again had a generational talent that has the asterisk of "... Who never won a ring".

I'd think long and hard about it at least.

But one of the first things I'm thinking is that we're coming off a (Denver) game where our lack of depth (because of injuries/ejection in this case) almost lost us the game. We almost were not able to pull things off, having to rely on Udoh, Allen and Niang.

This proposal means that (at least without finding stuff in the buyout market this season, or the cheap FA market next season), we'd be relying on Udoh as the number 2 center, Neto as the number 2 PG, and Niang as the #3 PF. That might be expecting too much from them, not to mention that any injuries (esp. at PG or C) would leave us very vulnerable.

I'd also be thinking that we now would be at a distinct disadvantage when teams go with two bigs on us (Locke was mentioning that Denver's statistically best lineup includes both Jokic and Plumlee, for example). Though I think Crowder and Porter could handle the PF spot most of the time, they are overmatched because of height or weight (respectively) on occasion (having Ingles and O'Neale as emergency PF depth doesn't solve the problem). We might survive with the small-ball pressure we'd be putting on them, but it's risky losing functional depth.

Plus we would stagger the bench with starters.
More top end talent is more important than good backs ups imo. Top end talent wins championships. Bunch of good but not great guys get you into the playoffs but that's it.

Any bench lineup that involved Niang has allowed our opponents to either close the gap or even make a comeback and take the lead in multiple occasions over the course of last few games. Our starters were good enough to bail them out, yes. But if this trend continues, it will inevitably start costing us some games.

I think with Conley you say to memphis... here are Favs and Ricky for Conley... you can shop them individually for salary dumps where you get worse players and a pick... but we shouldn't have to give up the pick there. If they value Exum I will do Exum and Favs. We could add Thabo for them and take Green back which saves them some this year.. they are right at the tax line so the savings matter.

The San Antonio offer could be decent... but most the other deals require them to take on future money that is bad.

I like Porter Jr. I think he'd fit well here. But he's not what we need. We need a shot creator. Someone who can get their own when our sets don't work or the defense plays well. Porter Jr is just another guy who gets shots in the flow of the offense. I don't really think he'd move the needle much for us unless he develops.

I agree with this though I think Porter would do very well here, I just don’t know who the shot creator is/could be. I’m scared of Conley’s contract more than his abilities. Those are big numbers.

It's as if these billionaires are treating this like a business where they hope to profit. Something they've done many times before to put them in the situation they're in. I'd like to see us win a chip as much as anyone but you know the Millers aren't going to risk a decade of empty seats and low ticket sales for a shot at the moon. It just not in their genetics and I can't blame them.

I'd like to see us win a chip as much as anyone but you know the Millers aren't going to risk a decade of empty seats and low ticket sales for a shot at the moon. It just not in their genetics and I can't blame them.

But I've already done the financials. Adding Porter and Conley doesn't put us in the luxury this year, 2019-2020 or probably 2020-21 when the salary cap will spike another $9 million. If anything, we should be demanding that we at least try to spend what we can to get the best product out there. The last few years, we have been closer to the salary cap than the luxury tax in an age when the best teams are over the luxury tax. I don't want to go over the luxury tax level, but we should be spending to it.
