2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

I'm going to leave NOLA alone for a minute.

What about this idea:

Dante Exum
for
Terrence Ross and a 2nd rounder

Why for Orlando: They are desperately seeking for better PG options. They might be in the running for Fultz, DSJ or Rozier, but Exum represents a much cheaper and/or less risky option than those 3. Ross is expiring so they might just lose him for nothing this summer. Since Orlando might pay to bring back Vucevic, getting a potential starting PG for under $10 is worth the risk. Orlando has 3 2nd round picks this year so giving one up isn't a huge deal.

Why for Utah: Exum gets mixed results from the Jazz fan base. I personally still have faith he can become good, but we don't have time right now to hope he gets good. With Mitchell learning more and more how to run the offense as our PG, the long term need for Exum might becoming less and less. Ross is a lights out shooter who can help us this year. He could even be a great fit for down the road but if he doesn't fit or leaves, we have more money this summer.
Orlando had a chance to draft Exum but since he completely disappointed them in workup before draft they drafted Gordon instead. I doubt whatever Exum showed in his 4 years in NBA made them change their mind about him.

Different management

I don't know why anyone would feel bad for that organization. This isn't a small vs big market issue in my eyes, its a ****** organization vs big market issue.

You feel bad for the small market Pelicans because Boston and LA along with their media have been pushing this AD narrative for years with no harsh enough penalties to keep them from tampering.

Just wait - in the next 5 years some of those big teams might start coming after Donovan. If we continue to be a 2nd round doormat, it will be awful. And are you gonna sit there and blame DL or are you going to be mad at guys like Magic Johnson and Danny Ainge who are tampering constantly?

Also, the Pelicans didn't make all bad moves. They got Jrue and made him great. They traded for Cousins and made him an all star starter. They traded for Mirotic who fit great before injuries (while dumping Asik). They revived Rondo. They signed Randle to a great deal. Injuries have screwed NOLA much more than the front office. AD can't stay healthy or win. Might not all be on the front office.

So there is hope they got more stupid:)

If you are Orlando, what do you have to lose? If they don't get Fultz, Rozier, or DSJ, where do they go? Conley on that mediocre team? No thanks.

Using an expiring to kick the tires on Exum is worth it. Hell, they could get one of those 3 PG's above and have Exum and still come out ahead.

Just a reminder people will complain no matter what.

Hayward played his contract and left. People complained.

AD gives his team a notice so they can trade him. People are complaining.

Which way you want it? Players got freedom when they become a UFA.

Exactly... AD is actually the good guy saving them from themselves because they are too dumb to recognize they've screwed up and need to move on.

Hayward sucks because we did many things right and he gave us no notice... not even when he was a few days away from free agency.

PG and AD should be applauded for their honesty. I feel a little bad for AD... he clearly still cares about his teammates (showed up last night in an awkward situation). He will get painted as a sell out, but he's wasting MVP years on a team that sucks, an ownership group that doesn't care about that team 1/10th as much as they do the Saints, and a fanbase that really hasn't shown up.

They might consider Exum for Ross, but they won't be adding to sweeten the pot. Ross is intriguing. Not sure how he fits the rotation unless there are other moves. Maybe in a three teamer where we got Conley and sent Ricky out. So you'd have Conley/DM and add Ross to the mix... IDK... he's a guy that can get 20 points real quick when he's hot and I like those types of rotation guys because they can swing games.

I'd rather have Exum than Ross

I’m indifferent. He could be a bad contract sonthe expiring is as much the benefit as the player. Exum is a weird roller coaster ride... the space isn’t that important this offseason so whatevs.

I'd be all in on Holiday.

I think New Orleans will let the deadline pass then just bench AD the rest of the year, trying to get better lottery odds, and keeping their main asset healthy.

In that scenario, why keep Jrue? An extra first, Exum and Favors? Sounds good to me.

I applaud PG because he did it in the offseason by informing the team NOT the media. AD came out in the last few weeks talking about how committed he was to NOLA then drops this bomb through his agent to the media. PG, Thon Maker, Kawhi - completely different than AD.

I'll give you the Saints vs Pelicans argument but that front office busted their butt to build around AD (Jrue, Mirotic, Boogie, Randle, Rondo, etc.). It's sucks that Cousins got hurt because that team looked poised to do some offseason damage. And when he went down, they went out and got Mirotic. When he left, they went out and got Randle. They have always been aggressive for AD. And some of this blame has to fall on AD. If he wasn't Mr. Glass every season maybe they win 5-10 more games, get further in the playoffs, etc.

I’m fairly sure PG did it mid season but it wasn’t as widely reported... he was on the market that deadline.

I think they are trying to extract the mega offer from NY (zinger, 1st, Knox?) or LA (ball, Ingram, Kuzma, 3 1sts) or they go to the offseason and do the Boston deal. The other offers are likely still there... so they don’t have much to lose.

Paul George just told the Pacers front office that he would not re-sign with the team the following summer. So he made this announcement during the offseason. He didn't even request a trade. The Pacers just knew they had to trade him rather than just lose him for nothing (side note - screw you Gordon Hayward).
