2020 Presidential election

Doesn’t the “socialism” of Warren and Sanders turn off suburban midwestern moderates?

Things like Medicare for all/eliminating private insurance, gun regulation, free college, and treating immigrants as human beings, makes it really easy for Trump to paint Democrats as extremists. Which might not matter if the presidential election was based on the popular vote. Truly, I do think that the majority of the DNC’s platform, even some of the more “extremist” positions, is overall more popular than whatever trump is serving. Unfortunately, Democrats have to win some key midwestern states or some key southern states to win the electoral college. And to me, those key midwestern and southern states make for fertile ground for trump to label Democrats as socialist, immigrant loving, gun regulating extremists.

While I really like Warren, I think Biden and Harris might give the Democrats their best shot to win.

I think Warren can peel off sanders voters but I don’t think sanders can peel off Warren voters. If she can swing back towards the middle at some point to get some Biden and Harris voters, she’ll be in good shape.

It’s too bad that we’re having this “Heart and Soul” Ofer the DNC debate now. In a better world, I really do think it’s time for the Democrats to swing left and bring our politics into the 21st century.

Most of our allies in Western Europe have universal health care and student subsidies, why can’t we?

However, right now is a terrible time to have this debate as our #1 priority should Be building a coalition to take out trump. Then debate how liberal we should go in 2024.

Warren is extremely intelligent and is a policy wonk. I know that turns some people off who hate trying to understand complicated things, but she's far from a nut job.

As of right now she's my #1.

Which is why I think she’s going to struggle in key midwestern (rust) states. I like Warren, she’s damn smart. I think she’s the best policy person out there. Which is why she’s hella not electable in the midwest and south.

Trump is going to kill it there. He’ll get every non-college educated white person to vote for him. and he’ll scare the rest that Warren has socialist plans that will take away their guns, make everyone get abortions, give up their health care, and share bedrooms with MS13.

Maybe I'm not up to speed, I don't see Warren as all that extreme at all.

Well, she wasn't my first choice until I saw her talk a few times. I think she's gonna grow on people.

She has the ability to explain, in extraordinary detail, what her plans are, why they are and how she plans to make it happen.

There isn't a candidate in the field more capable of articulating their agenda.

I think he'll enjoy the same level of success against her as any other candidate in this endeavor.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Trump talks about AOC and the rest of the "squad" as much as the eventual nominee regardless who they are. He will try to make it referendum on the far left.

I’m glad I’m not alone on this.

I really like Warren. I didn’t originally. But I love the way shes always thinking outside of the box. Even on things I disagree with her on. Because even if i don’t like her idea, I can see why she’s going with it. She’s way smart, level headed, and is able to communicate well... which is the opposite of trump. Trump does so much **** and does such a terrible job of explaining things, that even if another 9/11 happened, I’m unsure if I could get behind whatever **** he asked us to do in response.

So I really hope that if Warren is the nominee, people give her a chance.

What’s funny, is that a lot of those midwestern people would actually benefit the most from Warren. Higher taxes in the rich, job retraining, green tech, and public health care options would benefit rust belt states ravaged by globalization and opioid addiction the most.

You don’t think that trump will have a harder time painting Harris or Biden as a socialist? Or as another member of “the squad?” Because that’s the argument against Warren and sanders. And that’s the argument for Harris and Biden. especially uncle joe Biden, who clearly isn’t all about twitter, free education, health care, etc.

Right?

Just a side note, wouldn’t it actually benefit democrats for the election if the trump administration were to win its lawsuit against the ACA? If the ACA is struck down between now and the election, democrats no longer would need to argue about whether to build on the ACA or going with some version of Medicare.

Ironically, trump winning his suit against the ACA might resolve this health care dispute within the Democratic Party and cost him the election.

What do you think?

She’s not. That’s the thing, she’s not. I can see sanders being a tad on the extremist side. And being so grumpy and rigid that he’s unable to grease the wheels in congress to get anything passed.

But Warren isn’t as extreme. And she seems much more capable to build bridges and play politics to get legislative wins.

Honestly GF, maybe your experience around the world has you more “liberal” than many of our peers. What I’m saying, is that to many Americans, the concept of universal health care is foreign to them. When in reality, most industrialized countries resolved that issue decades ago. Their citizens don’t have to deal with the issue of either paying for chemo or going bankrupt. So I think a lot of what Warren says is pretty damn mainstream everywhere else. But might be seen as a little extreme in parts of this country where health care is a right for the handful of well employed, coal is part of the food pyramid, and the only thing Latin in town are the Coronas sold at the gas station.

As for painting Democrats as socialist, yeah I truly don't think it will matter what the candidates stand for. People willing to trust his word will do so regardless of reality.

I do agree regarding the ACA.

I hope you’re right. I really don’t want Biden. And I think his gaffes, that we all know are coming, could really cost him in the general. Plus, it seems like his own campaign seems a bit slow/reactive. Whereas I feel like both Harris and Warren are running superior campaigns.

I’m just worried that Warren will kill it on the coasts and win the popular vote while lose everything else in the middle. And because of the electoral college, some idiot addicted to Fox News, gets a disproportionate vote because he lives in some dumpster fire in Ohio or Michigan. The EC pisses me off. It literally makes the entire election dependent on the dumbest voters in Florida and a handful of midwestern states

It's an understandable fear. However Warren is a really engaging personality and has a knack for relating with people, which could serve her very well in the Midwest.

Also, before anyone calls me an elitist, I want them to read this story. These are the types of voters democrats seem to be chasing while trump already owns. And these types of voters, really bug me:

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/27/us/auto-worker-jobs-lost.html

He’s angry that the car factory shut down. But then refuses to move where he can find a job.

Dude, we all have gone through this. We’ve all had to move, get retained, etc. if I could, I’d live in a rural area Moab, Kanab, or kamas too. I’d love to make a decent living off a high school diploma. But that’s not the 21st century.

Am I supposed to feel bad for this guy? And how are democrats supposed to win this guy over when he refuses to move or receive training? He seems to just want to sit on his *** and wait for someone like trump to bring the 1950s back.

Read the article and tell me what you think
