There's some truth to this. Immigrants who get hooked on welfare and other social programs normally vote for Democrats who push those programs. It becomes something of a partnership that helps Democrats gain votes.

Interesting how all we hear about is the economic cost of immigrants, when the benefits to US citizens far outweigh the costs.

4% immigrant unemployment is noise level.

US businesses would shut down without cheap labor and the whole business would move south of the border.

We'd all be paying more for goods and services (cut grass, nanny kids, pick crops, manual labor).

Immigrants don't get welfare nearly as much as citizens do. They come here to work, and they work.

No, but I didn’t vote for Trump. I’m inclined to give veterans more leeway than I do other candidates. Doesn’t mean I’ll vote for them, but I will listen to them more than others.

I thought he would have. He seems to be about my father's age (my dad was in Vietnam) and it seems like almost everyone served in that era

No. He took the deferments that a lot of the wealthy class did - I think he took a college deferment and/or a medical one. Some people have trashed him for it, but I wouldn’t blame anyone for using legal means to avoid Vietnam.

Just like I don’t blame anyone for using legal methods to lower their tax liabilities. If it’s in the available laws, you shouldn’t feel bad about using loopholes.

With that said, I’d certainly downgrade you as a candidate vs. someone who served honorably. Every time.

My Grandfather (and one of the best men I’ve ever known) served in Vietnam and Korea. He talked to me a lot about how he wished he’d been able to avoid having to go over there. He was active combat and was responsible for the deaths of enemies. It took a toll on him. War is a terrible thing.

I’ll never criticize someone for not serving. It’s a very personal choice and one that I’m glad we’re free to make for ourselves. Compulsory drafts and conscription are borderline evil. I’m glad that the US is moving (almost) completely away from that structure. Both of my parents served in the military, and I’m proud of all our armed service personnel.

No doubt. I don't blame anyone for getting out of going to Vietnam by any means tbh. It's unfortunate that there isn't a level playing field when it comes to doing so legally, but the poor fighting wars while the rich sit on the sidelines has been happening for a few thousand years or so

Poor people have historically been required to serve. Having means usually provides you more opportunities to avoid it.

I don’t see how it’s any different from the wealthy and politically connected getting into colleges that they have no business qualifying for. It’s been that way always.

Donald Trump, Mitt Romney, Bill Clinton, Joe Biden all got deferments to avoid being drafted. Millions of wealthy or connected men would do just about whatever they could to avoid going to Vietnam. College, medical and family reasons were the most common ways to avoid being drafted.
