When it comes in connection with a surprising vertical leap I think its okay to raise an eyebrow. I'm sure there is some differences in body makeup and also how flexible/stretched out someone might be I suppose... but some of it is sandbagging to make the vert pop.
I think it's more about controlling where he goes to the best of their ability. I guess they arent too worried about him getting paid next season.
What I find suspicious is the notion that vertical jump will be a more important number than standing reach for draft stock. NBA players spend most of the game on their feet.
Matters a lot if your primary offense is being a lob threat, but that's probably about it. Even shot-blocking, while having a large vert and reach helps, is more about timing and how quickly you can jump/move rather than absolute height.
I agree... but a lot of times people equate athleticism with vertical leap. So for a guard or wing they might sacrifice a little on standing reach to get there. Size is typically remembered as height and wingspan... people look at standing reach but its not what is remembered. So rob Peter to pay Paul... if you think people will forget Peter and prefer Paul getting paid?
I bet if you looked at the top 25% and bottom 25% of vertical athletic testing for each combine, the top 25% would have more NBA players in it than the bottom.
