2023 NBA Draft Megathread

I'm curious, does the Taylor Hendricks fan club think that he will develop some self creation and play making, or just that it isn't important?

In my opinion these things severely limit his upside. Who is the top player in the NBA right now that can't self create or play make? I don't think you are a top 25 player in the NBA if you can't do any of that.

careful....I wouldn't question anything about his game or the mob will be after you.

Personally, I don't think he has great feel for the game and he's a little too upright for my liking. He can shoot, but he is not a super skilled player overall. Still like him as a prospect and would be happy with him at 9 and is in the same tier as Black/Wallace/Dick, but I wouldn't say he's higher than that.

I concede to you that those things do need improvement from Hendricks. Which is why I go back and forth between him and Cam Whitmore. But I don't think Hendricks needs to be a one on one iso player to be great in this league. I think the size and positional advantages the Jazz would have with him, Lauri, and Kessler would be better than if we had a smaller iso player at the 3 or 4. Ultimately I love the versatility, defensive switching and offensive ability that he would bring to this lineup. And then I would hope you develop some self shot creation and get better at playmaking. It's a risk no doubt, but with the other advantages he brings its a risk I'd like to take.

He finishes poorly at the rim. I think he avoids because he is super light. Add some meat and his upsides increases.
This isn’t exactly true… he finishes poorly on layups… but dunks a ton… so rim finishing really isn’t as big of an issue.

Not really true as far as the mob coming for him. It’s a very fair question.

Caught some heat for saying the same thing earlier so I thought I'd give him a warning. It is a fair question, but people have a tendency to turn it into an unfair/different question and make a big fuss about it.

It depends on what you are after. I doubt he is a guy you throw it to and say go get a bucket.

I think he will make plays as a roll man and in the middle of the floor. I think he will be able to do some of the dho stuff Lauri does. I think he can also dribble into some midrange shots if teams go small. The reason he works (if he does) is he provides the unicorn skill set… shooting, rim protection, and being able to switch on the perimeter as needed. Will hopefully allow you to shift up in size or shift down.

If top 25 player is the goal I got really bad news for ya… I doubt there are 3 guys in the top 25 in this draft. Could he be a star in his role like Mikal Bridges? That is the target imo if you draft Taylor. For me the “comp” on Taylor’s median/high outcome is John Collins but if John was elite at the things you value most from him.

The guys with the most creation in that draft range have some other serious limitations.

With Taylor I am assuming he will never be like a ball handling wing. I don't think he needs that to be effective. If he added that on top of the other stuff he projects to have... then you are really on to something. I think the path is more like super role player... OG Anunoby, Super PJ Washington, Mikal Bridges type dudes that fill in a lot of gaps and provide great flexibility.

I think this is why there's a good chance he gets taken over Cam/Ausar. Dick is a different type of player, but also a player that will just fit anywhere and can star in his role. Cason is a good bet to contribute early as well. Cam/Ausar are going to to take more development and resources. I feel like the teams directly ahead of us (POR, ORL, IND, WAS) all want to win more games next year than they did this year. Some of them will still be OK with a development project, but I bet one or two will bite on a player who is less of a project.

Thats the one. Thanks for the response and good points. I loved him and thought he would be awesome. He sucked. I loved justice winslow too and he sucked. (not sure if he is same level of athlete and broken shot or not too)
Justice Winslow actually showed quite a bit of potential and improvement over his first 4 seasons. Unfortunately he got bit by the injury bug pretty hard after his 4th season and completely derailed his career. Hard to believe he is still only 27.

It’s always assumed poor shooters will improve… it does not always happen. And I was messing with Cy… I think Walkers defense and passing are better but I’m not sure it will matter if you have to play him with a traditional non shooting center and he doesn’t shoot it really well. It’s kind of a toss up depending on what else you have… like Indiana would be an awesome spot for Walker… Taylor works too.

For us I would prefer the shooter.
I'm fine with either guy but if I were choosing between the 2 then I probably go with Walker because I'm really confident that he will be a Paul Millsap caliber of player and I think it will happen quickly. He will be a positive impact guy immediately and by year 3 I think he can be the Hawks version of Millsap.

I pretty much agree with all of this. I was just curious since I've seen people talk about his high upside, which I interpreted as star potential, which I don't really see with Hendricks.

I do like Hendricks a lot and think he could be super valuable to a team. I don't think you can take him over guys with star potential like Amen and Scoot though.
