2023 NBA Draft Megathread

Sure, same goes for everyone. He already had the size and was awful. Does not demonstrate burst to consistently get to the rim or the elevation to finish/draw fouls once he gets there. You say he’s huge….I’d say he’s slow and ground bound. At the end of the day what matters is the actual production and he was awful. He’s not just bad, he’s amongst the worst in the draft both at getting to the basket and finishing. Yeah he can improve, but he has a farther way to go than just about anyone.

If he was a proven, knockdown 3 point shooter or strong stocks guy it would be different….but right now he only offers a good mid range game and decent PG skills. He hardly stands out in any way besides the smooth mid range game which is the most difficult way to succeed in the NBA.

I can understand focusing on the best games they had and trying to gain some extra insight that way, but the way his best games went do not convince me. It came by way of super hot, streaky and unsustainable shooting. The only way this kind of play works is if you are elite. There’s a reason why JHS is one of the least efficient players in the class.

I'm not high on JHS, but there might be something to grabbing a player with a smooth midrange game that also has the size to defend. Modern defenses are constructed to deny the rim and stuff the 3 point line. They will literally give you the midrange for free. Having one guy that can get that is a huge bonus. Ideally, though, I would like for that player to have at least a rim game or a three point shot too.

I like him a lot more today than i did a month ago. I would be happy with him at 9 but i really want one of hendricks or ausar to fall to 9 or move up for walker or cam. If none of that happens then i probably want wallace at 9. If that also cant happen then probably dick at 9.
I want to like him but I see him as playing pg in the nba while not really being a pg that is skilled at playmaking for him or others with limited ball skills. What am I missing? I just can’t get excited about the prospects of picking him ninth.

I think the Jazz have to make a play for Cam Whitmore. It's the most Danny Ainge thing ever. Jazz would try to trade up to 4 or 5, imo. They'll offer a future pick and maybe Sexton to make up the difference from 9. Teams will want Ochai, and that's where there will be tension.

Shoot if we are trading up to four or five we need to pick a twin not Whitmore

I wouldn’t necessarily disagree with what you’re saying, but I guess my counter to that is that there’s also a reason teams give that up willingly. You have to make them at such a high rate to be efficient. But it’s definitely a nice thing to have in your repertoire when you can’t get the shots you want. We shouldn’t dismiss this as a strength of his.

It’s less about me disliking the mid range game and more about the inability to get more high efficiency looks. If you can’t get to the rim, free throw line, or shoot three’s it’s almost impossible to be efficient. I think JHS could get there with the 3 ball, but I think there’s a physical limitation with explosiveness at the rim and he just doesn’t have that knack for getting to the line.

I think the highly inefficient prospects like GG, NSJ, and JHS get interesting at #28….but at #16 I just think there are better prospects. Bufkin was slightly worse as a mid range shooter, but was also elite at the basket and has good stocks. George is not prolific at the rim, but he shoots a high volume of three’s and free throws. I’d definitely take those two over him.

Been saying for awhile, Cam is the most obvious Ainge-type there is. I don’t think Ochai is moving the needle for most lottery teams but the Jazz certainly have the ammo to trade up.
