2023 NBA Free Agency Thread

So (at least) two teams just dumped players central to their build before the draft has even happened... This is madness.
Im assuming marcus smart is one, who is the other?

For a long time, I’ve felt like using cap space to take on bad salary and draft assets was going to be the best use of that resource, but now I think it might be best to go after a player or two to add to the rotation -

Start off by giving a big offer to Austin Reaves day one and forcing LA to match it. When they do that, turn your focus to Kyle Kuzma or Jerami Grant. Depending on what happens with Clarkson, THT & Sexton, they could take a look at Naz Reid as well, but I imagine he’s going to want a starting job instead of being behind Kessler.
Ya I want to rush the rebuild lol. Im ready to win next season.

I'm good with trading for or signing a few folks, as long as it makes sense. Part of why I like Ainge doing this is his modus operandi isn't usually going after players past a certain expiration date unless there's a usefulness there. If no trades happen, I can accept that. We've a couple of good players already, so I can be patient. I just dislike making a trade just to make a splash.

DA is going to be opportunistic, without blowing the bank. The Westbrook/Conley trade was crucial for this off-season because it opened up a TON of flexibility this year. If there’s a deal that makes sense, he’ll jump on it. If not, he’ll sit back and let other teams screw up while he waits for FA to roll around.

Pretty much this. Just hoping one of those deals that makes sense happens during the draft. If not, I understand and trust Ainge there. But damn it, we deserve something!

I expect us to sign some players because currently for 2024-25 we have 7 players under contract for only 57M worth in salary:

Sexton
Lauri
Hendricks
Ochai
Keyonte
Kessler
Sensabaugh

I expect THT and Fontecchio to probably still be here, while Clarkson, Olynyk, Gay, Dunn, Jones and Samanic will all be gone by then. Decent chance Sexton is gone also.

Players I would throw more minor / small contracts at:

Either of the Holiday bros
Jevon Carter (I love this pickup for the Jazz!)
Josh Hart
Malik Beasley (I liked him on the Jazz when we didn't have Clarkson on the floor at the same time)

Players who are just too spendy for my liking but would be excellent additions if they can be had on a 1 year:
Cam Johnson (If the price is right then yes but that's unlikely)
Clarkson (run it back if the price is right)
Rui (ok)
Kuzma (meh)
Bruce Brown (doubt it)
Kris Middelton (doubt it)
Harrison Barnes (doubt it)

Free Agents that would help put us in the playoffs:
Draymond Green - but I just don't see it happening
FVV - He would be a tremendous P&R threat with Lauri! He is probably the only FA I would spend more than $30 million per year on. But I would prefer alternatives via trades.

I don't love going all in on any of these players. I am hoping for:

1. A few decent roll players on good contracts
2. Sizeable first year contracts with meaningful dropoffs so we can utilize these years of plenty for other years
3. 1 year contracts for guys who didn't find a home as filler salary space to get to the floor

I’m thinking we should go after Rui.
What do we see him as these days? A SF, PF, or combo? Or does it even matter with our system?

Certainly his defense and 3-pt shooting were encouraging from the playoffs (from what I was able to gather). Can he function as mostly a SF now?

Something has to be off with Player D. He had 32 games with 20+ points and 30 games with 30+ points yet only averaged 20.1 PPG?

Tell us. We are all busy.

Player A is 26 year old Gordon Hayward - which was an All-Star season and the year that Danny Ainge gave him a 4 year, $128 million contract.

Player B is 27 year old Kyle Kuzma coming off his most recent season with Washington. I personally think he should be the Jazz #1 target in free agency this year. Lots of similarities to Hayward when the Celtics went and got him in 2017.

Player C is 28 year old Fred VanVleet a year removed from his All-Star season. I’m not as big a fan of his, due to his size and age, but I can see why others would want him.

Player D is 30 year old Khris Middleton two years ago, which was his most recent All-Star season before his injury riddled season last year.
