2025 Annual All Time NBA Draft

The 90s Hakeem, Duncan, Admiral, Ewing, Morning.

Not sure there was a shift to great bigs in the 00s.

I think with them and Shaq, so many teams felt they needed some any big center to compete, and in reality they got stuck with a ton of Jim McIlvaines, Osterrags and Bryant Reeves types.

Yeah, I may have painted with too broad of a brush there. I'm not saying Shaq's presence was the "advent" of importance of having good bigs. But I feel like he was the driver of the "when in doubt, go big" draft mantra in the 2000's where teams just knew that if you didn't have a big athletic body to compete with him come playoff time, you didn't stand a chance.

Outside of the Spurs with Duncan, and the Pistons series, nobody really stood a chance anyways. It was so fun watching him in the Finals vs. the East teams. Felt like an automatic 35-15. Poor Sixers / Nets / Pacers just didn't stand a chance.

That mantra was in place after Wilt and Kareem. Bigs were always the #1 pick. It was the most important position long before Shaq. Now Shaq did cause GM’s to sign bigs that wouldn’t have gotten contracts because teams needed guys to eat fouls.
