2026 NBA Trade Discussion Thread

If we agree to a deal with him we can just order the signings so we have the money. Walker can really mess up our cap plan though by signing an offer sheet with another team. His number then becomes the offer number and not the caphold.

I know @KqWIN doesn't think it can happen... but I would still try to get him to agree to a deal in the few days we have exclusive negotiating rights.

No such thing as a period with exclusive negotiating rights :P If Walker's agent isn't already talking to teams he has a horrible agent. If he does agree during that period, no chance he didn't know what he could get from other teams.

I think it's possible that Watson is having a hot shooting streak at the same time that his opportunities to shoot have increased which are inflating his numbers more than what could be expected going forward. He's definitely shooting much better than his historical numbers and ft% would indicate. I also think that Watson is kind of the definition of an average defender. Adding average defense on our team would be fantastic, but it's not enough to counteract our bad defenders.

I'm currently not close to wanting to max Watson, but maybe if this hot stretch continues I'll be on board. The good news is we should be able to get a good look at him in the playoffs this year as well.

Right... I would try to do the negotiation in that window... knowing that they know... and knowing that I might be overpaying.

That is if I thought I had a great shot at Watson or another guy that might require the max cap space.

What would you want to do if we were fortunate enough to have to choose between maxing kessler or Watson?
Watson. Kessler’s potential as a floor stretcher is awesome but what’s most important is he blocks shots and rebounds and you can find those guys. They’re usually not that expensive.

Two-way 6’ 8” guys that score >20ppg on great efficiency on and off the ball are the apex player archetype. Fun exercise: name all the players that meet these criteria.

There is a glut of capspace teams this offseason and not a ton of targets. Add into that that RFAs necessarily get a bump in pay on their offer sheets.

Watson is a lock to get paid something close to the max but I think it’s the max.

His catch and shoot 3 point shooting is 60% during this stretch. Seems unsustainable. If we were to set his 3FG% to 38% instead of his actual 45% during this stretch and keep everything the same he'd be about league average TS%.

On the more optimistic side, I think there's a happy medium between what he's doing now role wise and what he was doing. But in order to be a max guy he needs his current play to hold, happy medium isn't a max.

I also have no idea what maxes are anymore. My grip on the cap is even worse than what it has been in the past due to how high the new numbers are.
The actual amounts are not necessarily important, the percentage of the cap is and it’s basically the same as it has been. What’s different is the apron.

But just for the record, the young max is 25% of the cap and starts at $41.5 million.

Here's how I hope this period goes down. Walker/his agent says: we have this offer from X team and we're going to sign the offer sheet which is structured in a non Jazz-friendly way....But we are willing to sign with you instead for the same money in a way that's more friendly to the Jazz cap situation.

Anyone have a feel for how big a contract we can offer a FA without bungling resigning our guys?
Not sure such a thing exists. You get the best players you can then trade the ones you basically can’t pay in the apron era to keep rolling forward the asset.

If Ryan wants to be GOATed then he’ll just say to hell with that but almost nobody is really doing that.

Think I'd still prefer to just go with two rotation level players over a max for Watson, but my opinion on that could change depending on if Watson continues to play at a high level (and actually watch him) and if the Jazz get a top 3 pick

If the Jazz get an AJ or DP I really see no reason in maxing a perimeter player.
