Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Rick Adelman has retired in order to spend more time with his family, which is a fact that is normally covered by Kurt and the guys over at Pro Basketball Talk.
And it was.
So why am I bringing it up here?
Because some of the names being tossed around as a potential replacement for Adelman will look quite familiar to the people that pay more attention to the college game.
Tom Izzo and Fred Hoiberg were two names that popped up immediately. There had been rumblings in recent months that Izzo is getting fed up with the recruiting games that are played at the collegiate level. He was mentioned as a candidate for the Detroit Pistons job back in March and strongly considered heading to Cleveland back in 2011, and all that is before you consider the fact that Izzo and Flip Saunders, Minnesota’s president of basketball operations, are close friends.
Hoiberg’s an obvious candidate. He played for the Timberwolves for two seasons before heart surgery ended his career and was the VP of basketball operations there before taking the Iowa State job. It’s a natural fit, and it wasn’t exactly a secret that the job would be coming open. That’s part of the reason that Iowa State gave Hoiberg a massive raise when the season ended. $23.4 million guaranteed to coach the team he grew up loving in his hometown as an alumnus of the university is tough to turn down.
Here’s the most interesting name: Florida’s Billy Donovan, which was floated by Marc Stein of ESPN.com.
Whoever ends up taking the job, their first order of business will be to try and convince Kevin Love that he actually wants to be in Minnesota. Without, the job looks pretty dire. The Timberwolves haven’t been to the Playoffs in a decade, they are coming off of a 40-42 season and they could be losing the guy they were hoping to build their franchise around.

Maybe these will be in the running here in Utah.

What are the odds of Love coming to Utah now that both Rick and Ty are gone and Lindsey is playing big?

And if possible, could it be done without giving away Kanter?

How would that look, two shooting bigmen? Think about the spacing in the lane for Burks, Burke and the draftee.

And imagine that they could be tought defense decent enough, both Love and Kant.

Defense = atrocious. Rebounding though..

And Donovan is NO WAY coming to Utah. Neither is Izzo. Hoiberg is an interesting possibility.

If we were to somehow magically get Love, why the hell would we need Kanter having Favors on a damn good 4 year deal and Gobert with big time defensive potential? Gobert would never see the light of day.

Kanter can substitute for both Love and Favors. And since this will not be the year for "re-building", he will not show uncomfort about his playing time and settle for a 25 mpg.

This is dreaming obviously. Kanter will never sit on the bench for another year. He made sure everyone knew that risking his job security.

So what you want is to let Kanter play one more year and get nothing back in return? Ok, carry on then.

I'm just saying what their motivations are. My first post was about how great it would be with them on the floor together. The other one explains that it is highly unlikely to chain him for another year.

Billy, Izzo, and Hoiberg are not coming to Utah.

I don't see Izzo ever making the leap. I can definitely see Billy doing it, but only to a large market. I really doubt Hoiberg leaves Ames any time soon but if he does I think he'd also be a candidate for a huge job. Lakers, Knicks, etc.

After the Orlando fiasco a few years ago, I wonder if any teams are that interested in hiring Donovan. I can see Hoiberg taking over for Adelman in Minnesota. Izzo isn't leaving MSU.

i love izzo, but he doesn't want an nba job. he had so many opportunities to coach in the NBA. turned all of them down. he is players coach and i think he would do well, but he ain't coming here

Yea I am not too excited about any of those guys. The NBA is a whole different game then the pros. Hoiberg would be my pick of the three but I would be shocked if he even interviewed for the job.

Any idea on Izzo's standing reach? (By "idea" I mean "exact")
