The idea that we need term limits is based on the notion that we will never have quality elected officials so it's better to have ones that are neutered than ones that have the ability to become potent. To me that's no solution. If we're all so convinced that there is no possibility of getting the right person elected then our problems run much deeper than the length of their terms.

It also creates a lame duck congress every x number of years. If people think perverse incentives are bad now then they'll really hate what a group of people with nothing to lose would do.

Our system works just fine. I think we need to quit hating so much and acting like know it alls. We have great folks in Washington doing the best job they can do.

I realize it's a view of our world that probably 99% find shocking. It's been beaten into our heads for five decades how bad congress is, how evil the presidents are, how corrupt this and that... I take it as human nature, and the party system amplifies it plenty. People believe congress is corrupt and that is that.


Every time I've read a newspaper article and following comments about something I have inside knowledge on I've read the exact same sentiment from people who have less than no clue. That was an eye opener into judging "evil" people with more knowledge and insight than I have. "Seek first to understand" and all of that.


Congress ain't that bad when you listen to them when they don't have to appeal to party populism.

I am against any form of term limits. I think elections should represent the will of the people.

What if the greatest person in the history of the universe for the U.S. presidency got elected? We should move that person along in 8 years and put in one of these run of the mill jackasses we've had for the last 80 years in the office?

I disagree. "The greatest Person in the history of the universe", when He comes again, will give us the right global governance, I hope. But when he was here the first time, he didn't think holding political office was the only way to make a difference, and chose instead to teach others to live by His principles, if they would.

George Washington also didn't really want a political career.

I say anyone who thinks politics is the way to greatness and power is a suspect sociopath, and of course we should limit their "careers". Same thing with all government officials, imo.

Would term limits make lobbyists stronger or weaker? Would it get too expensive for insurance companies and drug companies and wall street thugs to buy off a new group of politicians every 4-6 years?

Stronger. No one in Washington stays bought because of funds you spent 8 years ago, it's the fund in the last election, and the next, that talk. However, with a continuing stream of new legislators, lobbyists will have an easier task of persuasion. Also, those politicians constantly leaving office will still want to make money, and what better way than with positions in the companies whose policies they voted for?

Somebody should give us a rundown of the good FDR liberal talking points, for humor purposes.

FDR knew that most of what he did would not turn the economy around, but it's also true his first month in office was the worst month of the Depression. He was trying to keep the populace fed, compliant, and somewhat productive until the problems with the world economy fixed themselves.

So, what precisely do you find in there to laugh at?

To put the original post in perspective, Clinton would have beat pretty much any Republican challenger in 2000, and possibly in 2004. How most of you have felt about 16 consecutive years of Bill Clinton?

FDR's greatest policy was letting Pearl Harbor be bombed. WWII is what lifted the US out of the depression and shot the US to world dominance for decades.

I am for term limits on congress too. I am sure if the president was still Bush the poll would be different.

As far as politicians distancing themselves from the president, this is nothing unusual. McCain certainly didn't parade around GW during his election bid. Neither did AL Gore (mistake) because Clinton was coming off the BJ and Gore was trying to distance himself but instead if he had focused on the positives of the Clinton administration he probably would have won the electoral vote too.

Americans on both sides love to bitch about the other side and that is why we have politicians who are more concerned about being reelected. However if you think about it can you imagine if your job only lasted for eight years or if your basketball team was only allowed to win two years in a row but couldn't try for the third due to term limits.

Yea I know silly but why not allow a president to run for a third. If his policies are so bad he shouldn't win a third election. Right? Not saying I am for it but the GOP shouldn't worry about Obama running a third time because they surely would beat him. Right?
