(CNN)
-- A mother of 10 who threw a birthday party for her 5-year-old daughter at a Chuck E. Cheese's restaurant in suburban Houston, Texas, apparently forgot about the girl, went home without her and failed to realize her mistake until the next day, police said Friday."She was remorseful. She was upset," Pearland police investigator Jeff Mink said by phone. "But the question still arises, how and why the child was left behind? And why it took so long for the mother to realize the child was still missing?"A restaurant worker alerted police to the abandoned child at 10:50 p.m. Thursday, but the mother did not report her missing until 7:50 a.m. Friday, Mink said.

I just wonder why the police didn't notify the family that they had their kid.

Kids are resilient. They usually start talking again after a few weeks when incidents like this happen.

Meanwhile, the child has been placed in the custody of Child Protection Services.

As a man of many tickets from Chuckie Cheese over the years, I think I'd be more comfortable with my child staying with the mascots or in the ball pit overnight than with CPS for any extended period of time.

Also, it's Houston, Texas. The chances that kiddo even speaks English probably isn't that high. They probably had to take him by the Home Depot to make a proper identification.

Something similar happened to me and a friend with her 7 year old years ago, ironically at a Chuck E Cheese!!! Originally the kid was going to come home with me and my kids, but then he changed his mind so I brought him back to his mom. Apparently he'd left his jacket somewhere and went to get it, then went back to his mom and told her he'd changed his mind again and would come with us, and went to find us, and his mom left. But we'd already left as well...

anyhow, the boy had a few bucks in his pocket so he just kept playing the games and stuff for another hour or so, until my son decided to go over to his house to see if he could play (they were neighbors of ours) and his mom was like "Isn't he with you?" and we realized he hadn't gone home with either of us. She raced back to the restaurant to see what she could find out, and there he was, picking out prizes with his tokens!

Who knows how long it might have been if my son hadn't decided to go over to their house to see if he could play!

This was back in the days before every 7 year old had their own cell phone, but he told his mom he was going to call her (from the pay phone) once he'd picked out his prizes.

mother with ten kids? And she was able to wake up before 8 am?

She's more functional than the CPS folks, make them give back her kid.
