Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't several of the shootings (Aurora, Newtown) in places that were gun free zones? Perhaps what we should focus on is educating the criminals on where they can and cannot commit a crime with a gun. Then we could create all these gun free zones and really be safe inside them.
