A story about prayer

I'd love to talk to you, but I don't want to waste my time talking to someone who's so above other's beliefs and looking to belittle belief systems, other's reasoning on why things happen, etc. If you'd like to talk without being condescending and not throw in jabs like "folklore" and "wasted" let me know.

Folklore is the most accurate description I can come up with while staying neutral. I was going to go with "myth", but that sounded more charged. I don't like the fact that I need to watch my every word when discussing religion. I can be stoically objective if you prefer. I will drop the confrontational tone, and play nice. But keep in mind that I find none of what you believe in sacred or divine. I can't even lie and say that I respect such beliefs. I view religious faith as a moral and intellectual aberration that has real and significant impact on everyone's life. That said, I will do my best to show respect for you. I will fight my impulse to be an ***.

Tried to rep you there, Siro, but it seems I must spread my seed first.

It's fine that you think most of us are idiots, etc. but there are things that probably should be off limits, don't you think? Race, Color, Creed, Sexual Orientation, whether or not you seriously watch The Bachelor shows. Religion should fit in there somewhere. Sure, I have the right to start ripping on Jews, Blacks, or Shemales, but seriously?

I'm glad you can contain yourself, you're so much more entertaining to read when you're being funny rather than a dick face.

thats Awesome I think prayer Can be good sometimes to relax Or when you want something but Its not for everyone And thats are right. I never get why people Think others shouldnt be allowed to Pray if they dont believe in it Like my friend Niko always goes I pray god Gives me a million bucks right now and when it doesnt appear He always is like "see - I'm right" but God doesn't always work So fast I think.

Which one of those are choices and which ones aren't?

And are any those types saying "Being black lets my son go to sleep?" "Having boobs and a ***** lets my son go to sleep." That would be worth of ridicule, right? And, "Being religious lets me son go to sleep" isn't?

No one in this thread has said that. The only thing that has been questioned is linking prayer, and more specifically, the supposed answering of said prayer, to putting someone to sleep.

Not to mention: this is Jazzfanz! What the hell do you expect? Everything gets ridiculed around here, why would a post about prayer be exempt?

Colton, please delete this thread.

I only saw your request just now, but since the thread has some good stuff in it I don't think I'll delete.

Actually, I'll share one of my own prayer stories. Eight years ago I got a very expensive superconducting electromagnet as part of a grant. The installation technician came and needed a part that had been delivered to me previously. We looked around for 45 minutes and couldn't find it anywhere in the lab. I was getting very frustrated because if he couldn't complete the installation that day it would be another month before he could come back again, and another $1000 of expense, or something like that. In hindsight it really wouldn't have been the end of the world, but on that day I was feeling a lot of stress. After all that searching I decided to say a prayer asking for God's help in finding the missing part. Literally one second after I finished the quick prayer I all but heard a voice saying "Look behind that box over there", as I spotted one of dozens of boxes that were in the lab. I walked over to the box, moved it aside, and the part we were looking for was directly behind it.

Now, could that have been coincidence? Yes. Could it have been an answer to a prayer? Yes. I choose to believe the latter.

But why is it off-limits? Race categorizes different groups at random as being part of a similar entity. It doesn't have any clear meaning, nor does it signify anything specific. The only reason the concept was created is to create division. But that is neither here nor there. Society rejects racism because it is prejudice against someone for neutral personal traits that cannot be changed. As obvious as that seems, racism was common and socially accepted until very recently. Sexuality is even less clear. Surely not ALL sexuality is treated as off-limits. People aren't tolerant of pedophilia or bestiality. They aren't even tolerant polygamy, which was the norm through out history. You're simply talking about gays. And until about the 70s, homosexuality certainly was not off-limit.

What I'm trying to say is that there should be reasons of why something is accepted or tolerated. Things don't just magically become moral. Modern society has made the objective assessment that things outside of our control should not be criticized. So you can't treat someone differently because of the amount of pigment in their skin, or because they had a limp or a lazy eye.

So why can't we criticize religion? The one and only reason is because those who, amazingly, believe its claims get their feelings hurt. That is not a valid reason to protect anything. Unsurprisingly nobody cares if you talk a mountain of trash about Ancient Greek religions or Mayan ritual sacrifices. It is only one's own belief that needs protecting.

Wow, that's your argument?

It doesn't matter how ridiculous it sounds to you, or to anyone else, it's about respecting people and their beliefs. Good job on sounding like a **** head though.
