What's new

alec burks and enes kanter

i'm really not concerned about his scoring against legit nba bigs at all. first of all, i have to repeat it again, enes is 6-11 1/4 in shoes, has a 7-1 1/2 wingspan and a 9-1 1/2 standing reach. so, he is not undersized for a center. he has legit center size. to go on with, he just turned 19 years old and there is still some room to grow. i expect him to become a legit 7 footer in shoes with a 7-2 wingspan and a 9-2 standing reach. his athleticizim is average or slightly above average but his quickness is above average and the way he runs the floor is above average as well. in the last interview he said he was going towards 270 lbs. expect him to become a 7-0 and 275 player in three or four years. men grow until they are 23, so enes has a chance to grow a little bit, too. but he doesn't have to, he already has solid size even if it isn't freakish.

enes will overpower most power forwards in the nba due to his strength and power and he will be to quick for many centers in the nba. against centers who are bigger than him, he will use his perimeter game more. he is a solid shooter and has a solid face up game which he has improved incredibly over the last two years, especially during his time at high school. right now in europe, he is dominant against most bigs who are smaller or at his size, so he does not use his face up game and midrange game that much because he doesn't have to. but against bigger guys, he will use his quickness and face up game much more. he already has a complete offensive game and he still has much room to improve. i have to say that i was suprised with how agile and how quick he is for a guy his size. i even was impressed by his solid defense. right now, he scores through offensive rebound put backs and back to the basket game. no need for his face up game and midrange jumpshots at all. but he will have to use it more often in the nba, that is obvious. he also will go the the free throw line very often. i do believe that he is more of a power forward than a center, but he really has the skillset to play both positions and also the size. he will create mismatches for both positions, you will see. he can be an impact player as a rookie, but he needs his two or three years to develop and there are only a hand full legit 7'+ bigs in the nba he will face.

In all honesty I'm worried about Kanter's ability to score in the NBA. I think he'll do great with opponents of equal size or smaller than him, but against legit 7'+ bigs he'll get shut down ala Boozer. His lift will be an issue, book it. I like his effort and the way he moves on defense, and I think he'll rebound with the best of them. But I don't see him getting a consistent 15-20 each night with Favors, Jefferson, and Sap ahead of him. I guess we'll see.

I think Burks has the opportunity and the ability to earn some serious burn this season. His position is probably the most wide open, at least after Hayward. His scoring, passing, and rebounding will earn him solid minutes off the bench. His defense will be the only thing that will hurt him. I see him getting at least 15-20 off the bench next season.

I don't think he'll struggle. He can create great spacing with his strength to more than account for the couple of inches he might be giving up. Its just a matter of getting the timing down and watching out for help defenders. The help defenders will be the ones that he will be highly susceptible to. For instance he was able to back down Gasol in the game and dunk on him, but later spun around him in a dunk attempt only to be blocked at the last second by the help defending Felipe Reyes. This is a lot different scenario than Boozer had, where Pau Gasol flat out stuffed or stymied him one on one.

We were when he was playing in the Indy Pro-am and he was the flavor of the month. He isn't really doing anything that can be followed/observed now though.

This is true.

In related news, this gave me a most powerful renob:

thanks for posting this video. i really like burks' game. he can create his own shot, has solid athleticizm and a freakish wingspan which will help him on the defensive end. he gets to the free throw line at a high rate and is a great slasher. his ballhandling and point guard skills are not bad as well. if he can improve his outside shoot and become more consistent, he will be a helluva player. he has great tools to deal with and to improve and solid potential. i like him next to hayward.

The thing I like about Kanter is that he plays in the paint right under the hoop on both ends. Last year, the Jazz didn't have anyone who wanted to stay in the lane. He's got the size to be a real anchor and enough skill to have an impact on the game. I think his offensive game could also evolve similar to Demarcus Cousins', who isn't explosive either, but apparently DC has a few inches more reach. Kanter won't jump over people, but he should be able to develop a few more moves to utilize his wide-body and score.

I like Burks a lot and think he has more upside than people may give him credit for. It depends on his BB IQ and how he works in the system. He's got physical tools, but needs to be mentally tough to be an impact player. The question is how hard he wants to work. He should be able to score, and defensively he might have Doug Christie/Eddie Jones potential.

Burks' body language and swagger on offense reminds me of a taller/longer version of Monta Ellis. On offense, that's not a bad thing. On defense... we'll have to see. He could be an exciting player though. Quick, good handle, knows how to score, 36" vertical.

Burk's was impressive in the summer league for sure. I would like to see him in something that matters. Similar to what Enes has been doing since summer leagues can cause players to develop bad defensive habits. Have to admit that I scanned for highlights of Burks all the time from the Indy-Pro Am league when it was going. That's why an NBA summer league would have been so good for these guys. End lock-out, end!

Kanter should have had Turkey look into naturalizing Alec like they did Preldzic.
