Writeup for the Ellis 269ers

My original plan was to put together a fast-paced team that was creative, passed the ball and was fun to watch. With Jordan off the board, I figured that Magic was the next best player to build that kind of team around. I ended up targeting the two other hall of fame players that the Jazz had the rights to as they were transitioning from New Orleans to Utah in Dominique Wilkins and Moses Malone. I think that a "Big 3" of Magic Johnson, Moses Malone and Dominique Wilkins would have been damn fun to watch. I also added Patrick Ewing to match up with opposing centers and Kawhi Leonard to harass the top wings that they'll face. Pistol Pete can spark off the bench as my 6th man. Plus outside of Damian Lillard, my bench is full of HoF legends of basketball.

Key Matchups -

C: Patrick Ewing (7'0" - 285 lbs.) vs. Hakeem Olajuwan (6'11" - 255 lbs.)
This matchup is closer than it might appear. While I'll acknowledge that Olajuwon is one of the best centers to ever play the game, Patrick Ewing is a Hall of Fame center as well. In 28 games played against each other, they split the wins - 14 each - and they played nearly equally statistically - Olajuwan was slightly higher all around - 10.8 vs. 8.9 rebounds per game, 2.3 vs 1.8 assists per game, 2 vs 1 blocks per game, and 20.7 vs. 18.1 points per game.

PF: Moses "Chairman of the Boards" Malone (6'10" 215 lbs.) vs. Anthony "Unibrow" Davis (6'10" - 237 lbs.)
Anthony Davis is slightly bigger, but Moses Malone was a Hall of Famer for a reason. He can use his savvy and superior positioning to dominate the boards. This is a big win for me on the glass. Davis has averaged 8.2 and 10.0 rebounds per game in his first two seasons. Over his 20+ year professional basketball career, Moses Malone averaged at least 10 rebounds per game 16 times (and another 3 seasons of at least 8.0 rebounds per game.) His career best numbers - 17.6 rebounds per game (78/79) and 31.1 points per game (81/82).

SF: Dominique "Human Highlight Film" Wilkins (6'8" 224 lbs.) vs. Kevin Durant (6'9" 240 lbs.)
Two elite offensive players with defensive deficiencies. Durant is more of a shooter, Wilkins is more of a slasher/dunker. Durant's career average is 27.4 points per game, while Wilkins's averaged 26.4 during his 12 year career with Atlanta. Durant has scored more than 25 points per game in 5 of his 6 seasons, while Wilkins scored at least 25 points per game 10 of his 15 years, and only in his last season did he ever score less than 17 points per game.

SG: Kawhi Leonard (6'7" 230 lbs.) vs. Paul George (6'9" 220 lbs.)
Defensive keystones on the perimeter for each team. I think that Leonard has the potential to be the better player of the two, but it's debatable. George is certainly the more developed offensive player at this junction, but when put on the biggest stage in the 2014 Finals against the 2 time reigning Champs, Kawhi Leonard put up the best performance of his career. He was the leader and spark for the champion Spurs and went on to become Finals MVP for his efforts on both ends of the floor. While he's done good things up to this point, his best basketball is still ahead of him.

PG: Earvin "Magic" Johnson (6'9" 220 lbs.) vs. Steve Nash (6'3" 183 lbs.)
Huge advantage goes to Magic simply because of his size and passing ability. There's no way that Nash could really matchup against any of my starters, but certainly not against Magic Johnson. Arguably the best passing PG in NBA history (4 time NBA assist leader), Magic Johnson also led the NBA in steals twice, averaged 19.5 points per game (vs. Nash's 14.3 points per game) and had more than twice as many rebounds as Nash per game as well (7.2 vs 3.0). While Nash is one of the top point guards of his era, Magic Johnson is one of PG ever. The Lakers without Magic simply wouldn't have been "Showtime" and probably aren't the dynasty of the 80s that they were.

6th Man - Peter "Pistol Pete" Maravich (6'5" 197 lbs.) vs. Alex English (6'7" 190 lbs.)
Two offensive powerhouses of their respective eras. Both guys could shoot and create scoring opportunities for themselves and their teammates. "Pistol Pete" was one of the most creative players ever to grace a basketball court. Not only was he an elite passer, but he was also an elite shooter. Alex English was a great value pick and a heck of a guy to bring off the bench. Both players can provide the offensive spark needed with the backup unit. Maravich averaged 24.2 points per game, while English averaged 21.5 points per game for their respective careers.

Bench - Nate "The Great" Thurmond (Hall of Famer), George "Mr. Basketball" Mikan (Hall of Famer), Dave "Big D" DeBauschere (Hall of Famer), Earl "The Pearl" Monroe (Hall of Famer), Sidney "Sid the Squid" Moncrief (Hall of Famer) and the young upstart Damian Lillard to learn from Magic and Pistol Pete how to play PG vs. DeMarcus Cousins (talented headcase), Larry Nance (quality defensive player), Derrick Coleman (talented but injured power forward), Peja Stojakovic (stud international player), James Harden (offensive star, but defensive liability) and Rajon Rondo (talented headcase). I feel pretty good about my depth. While Thee has some great players, he's banking on potential vs. proven greatness. 6 of my seven reserves are hall of fame players, while only one of his is. And while my starters are a nice blend of passing, scoring rebounding and defense. . . I stacked my bench with a couple of shooters and some bad-*** defenders.

I actually really like what Thee Jazz Fan has done, especially that Olajuwon and Durant pairing, but I feel like I have a nearly perfect team to matchup with them. Between Magic Johnson, Dominique Wilkins, "Pistol Pete" Maravich, and Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, I should have one of the most exciting and creative backcourts of all the teams fielded. I'd have loved to see what the Jazz would have been like had they managed to hang on to all the HoF talent that they had at their disposal during their early years. Ridiculous.

Oh, and I think that I might have put together the best collection of nicknames in this exercise. Magic, Chairman of the Boards, Human Highlight Film, Pistol Pete, Earl the Pearl, Mr. Basketball, Sid the Squid, Big D and Nate the Great. Freaking epic nicknames.

THEE JAZZ FAN'S WRITE-UP

MY TEAM:

Nash. Rondo*
George. Harden.* English
Durant. Alex English. Peja
Davis.* Nance. Coleman
Hakeem.* Cousins Coleman

STARTING LINEUP

STEVE NASH

One of the best ever shooters at the pg position.* Nash one of only six players to have ever shot 50–40–90, and one of two players to do it more then once (Bird is the other).* To put into perspective how good a pg Nash is... Nash is one of 4 pg's to win MVP ever, and he did it twice in 05 and 06. Nash was the leader of a very good, and uptempo system. Nash is what made this team go, and now he has guys like Durant, Hakeem, George, English, and Davis will see a ton of alleyoops from Nash.*

I will have Nash guard the Pistol

PAUL GEORGE

Paul George is still pretty young in his career, but he belongs in this draft, because he is an established star now!!* George has no glaring flaws to his game... He can shoot drive to the rim, pass, has great handles, lead a team, score, good ft shooter, athletic freak, and a LOCK DOWN DEFENDER!* He will spend time guarding Johnson, he has the ability to disrupt Magic.* Disrupt Magic, you disrupt the entire offense.*

KEVIN DURANT

Simply put...* Kevin Durant is special.* He's a 6-9 240lb sf strong enough to hold his own at pf, and yet plays like, and moves like skilled sg. There isn't a player alive that can guard Durant thanks to his perfect combination of power and guard like handles and skills, and can score, and hit his shot from anywhere on the court. Wilkins will be the one defending Durant, and Dominique Wilkins standing at 6-7 200lb's Durant will easily overpower Wilkins and shoot over the top no problem. Wilkins is way over matched. Again like George there are very few flaws to his game. * Durant is the perfectly built offensive player.* *

ANTHONY DAVIS

Davis will make a great glue guy for my team.* In just two years of play, he's already a 20/10 guy, and elite defender, and considered by many already the best pf in the game today, and at-least top 2. Davis is another extremely long athletic stud that has a complete game.* He can play inside and outside. Davis has great touch from 20 feet out, and must be respected from 3.* Moses Malone is not accustomed to guarding on the perimeter.* Before Ellis try's to say Malone will overpower Davis, this simply isn't true.* In Malone's best playing days he was 6-10 215lb's, and Davis Stands at 6-10 220lb's. Don't get me wrong, Malone was a great athlete for his time, but let's face it, they don't come more athletic then Davis.* Davis is a great two way player, but he's here for his elite defense. His combination of elite athletic ability, and length, and uncanny shot blocking timing allowed him to be last years number 1 shot blocker per game.*

HAKEEM OLAJUWON

They don't call him the Dream for nothing.* If you were to build the perfect center, you would end up with Hakeem Olajuwon.* Whether its shooting footwork in the post, rebounding, shot blocking, passing, steals, ft shooting, athletic ability. Anything he did on the court was elite level. The Dream had no flaws, and was, is the most versatile and talented center of all time.* Patrick Ewing is one of the all time greats, but in a NBA finals head to head matchup vs. Hakeem the Dream, Ewing was taken to task. Hakeem's current opponent.
Hakeem>Ewing.

SECOND UNIT:

On my bench I need a high powered offense.* Look at guys like Harden and English. Both are a huge problem for Ellis's backup 6-3 guards can guard Harden, he will live at the ft line, and make plays for his teammates.* During his time in the 80's English was one of the most potent offensive players. No one scored more points in the 80's then English. I've got one of the best backup pg's in the draft in Rondo, a great pass first pg, and defender, and do everything great player, he trumps Lillard.* Peja will get some burn killing Ellis's team for 10-15 minutes knocking down threes.* My bench is also very deep with front court players.* Nance brings athletic ability length, and shot blocking (2.2 for his career), and out dueled Dr J in the first dunk contest, an above the rim player, Coleman was a very skilled offensive player, and could be a stretch 4 and a great post scorer, and could put the ball on the floor and drive to the hoop, and Cousins is a mini Shaq down low, and was tied for 1st in offensive rebounds last year.

GAME OUTLOOK:

I've assembled a team that's pretty much bigger, stronger, quicker, and more athletic then any other team assembled through the draft. This is a team built on precision offense and defense defense defense.* The starters will play an uptempo, athletic brand of basketball.* My team will spread Ellis's team out with lots of pick'n roll and pop. When there's no quick easy buckets my team will spread out and play inside out basketball with Hakeem either taking Ewing to school, or if doubled Hakeem is smart enough, and an elite passer from the post either hitting a cutting Davis who will keep Malone out of the paint or hit an open Durant, George or Nash, all great shooters fom 3.* I have three elite long athletic freaks in my starting units who play elite defense. It will be like the defensive clinic we are used to seeing team USA in past years playing shutdown defense against the usual lesser apponets in international play...

My team is a bad matchup for Ellis, as we are made up of a team of athletes and length, and Ellis's team doesn't have much shooting to speak of.* Magic isn't a shooter, Pisto is good but not great from distance and His backup wings aren't three point shooters and for the most part wasn't a part of their games speaking of Sidney Moncrief 28% life time 3pt shooter, and Earl Monroe, who played before the three point line was created, with the exception for his final year, and he didn't even bother to attempt one 3pointer. Then there is Ellis's backup bigs, Nate Thurmond, Miken, both not phisicaly ready to take on any of my bigs, and both had bad lifetime FG% of 40, and 42. Miken is a center playing pf, and not much of a perimeter game, where as Thurmond is smallish center at 6-11 225 lb's, and not strong enough to deal with Cousins or Coleman. Willkins is a one trick pony, not a great shooter, and can't dribble with his left hand.* With all my long athletic defenders and shot blockers we can sit back in the paint and shut him down completely.*

I think this is a blowout from the start, as my team really isn't challenged much.

I'm picking TJF. We said we are picking today's rules and the lumbering combo of Ewing and Malone would have trouble imo. That coupled with TJF having killer closers in Hakeem and Durant seals it for me.

Ya this one is tougher than I thought it would be.

At first glance I thought thee would get my vote easily.
The more I thought about it, the closer it played out in my mind but end the end I still go with thee

I've built a complete team built on length athetic studs. And a fantastic combo of offense and defense. This is a team that will generate tons of blocks and turnovers. Think team USA vs basically any team they faced.

Not to mention the shooting all up and down my roster. I also don't need to worry much about outside shooting, and my long athletic stoppers can just crowd the paint and force his team to shoot jumpers all game long. Really there are very few weaknesses on this team.

IMPORTANT

Wes, I just accidentally vote for Ellis269, instead of TJF. Can we somehow correct it? Or at least state the correct voting in the first post?

Btw, it was because of the battery of my wireless mouse was dying and the cursor was jumping around.

Same.

My main thing is that Ellis doesn't have the outside shooting to spread the floor for an awesome big lineup of Moses/Ewing.

Not gonna vote just yet doe

Is this your go-to argument?

Tough one. Ellis's team is made up of 9 HOFers and all-time greats, Thee's team has a bunch of current players (the best in the league right now) but I'm not sure they are HOF caliber players (Harden, George, Davis, Rondo, Cousins). I think Thee has a better blend of player skillsets, outside shooting, rebounding, defense, passing, but his bench looks weaker. Ellis can go two deep at almost every position with a HOF player. I think I'd give the nod to Ellis's team, but it's very very close.

Just because he has more HOF players doesn't mean his team would win. Both his backup sg's are undersized, and can't shoot threes. His backup 4-5 combo a severally under matched vs my backup bigs in Nance, Cousins and Coleman. His bigs both shoot 42% and less. How I'm down by 11 votes is beyond me, guess Ellis is getting the nostalgia vote. I have no idea how his guys can guard mine, and get enough stops to score with my team, then look at the number of lockdown defenders I have in George, Rondo, Davis, Nance, and Hakeem. Please explain how Ellis's team beats me? My athletes as I explained are bigger stronger longer, and better athletes. Not to mention we can score every way imaginable.

this IMO is a total mismatch. Ellis team wins rather easily because

1. just look at how balanced they are.

2. and just look at that perimeter defense. sick

3. great twin tower(thurmond & moses)

4. the greatest PG of all time

5. human highlight film (pair him with Magic? nique will look like MJ)

IMO magic would put on a show. this is magic to nique ally oop party all night long.

and nate thurmond is hakeem's nightmare. nate thurmond is pretty much one of the greatest defensive center of all time. he is the ultimate neutralizer. i would start him over ewing. and ewing would come off the bench and abuse cousins.

you know what? i think this is a sweep. easy sweep.
