What's new

Amnesty

We don't know the new CBA. But assume a similar LT system and say Memo makes 10 for easy math. If the Jazz are over the tax by 3 million, that's 16 million for Memo. Alternatively, they pay Memo his 10 upfront (a sunk cost in either scenario) and they save the 6 they would have paid in LT (not to mention the money they later get as payment for being under the LT).

The bottom line is if the Jazz are going to be taxpayers in a new system with Memo, I would expect them to exercise the amnesty clause on him and go forward with the guys they have.

Actually, it would be 13 million. Paying a guy to go away for three million? Much more prudent to do a salary dump then that. Teams wouldn't take a flyer on Miles for a second rounder? There are many better options than amnesty.

I never get the math right. But it's not just paying Memo to go away for 3. In that scenario, it would be putting themselves 7 million under the LT. A little room to maneuver making deals, adding cheap vets, etc. And on the back end they do go from being tax payers to receiving a payout so there is more money involved. All conjecture at this point without the CBA. But in principle, I agree with you and I doubt the Jazz exercise the amnesty on Okur.

Let's try to remember that Memo might not do anything for the Jazz whether he's amnestied or not. If it's a matter of getting out of the tax or getting space for free agency it is a no-brainer.

If there's no MLE (as has been proposed) then there wouldn't be a great incentive to springing Memo. But being under a (new) LT would. No way the Jazz will be taxpayers in any deal with a team that isn't predicted to make the playoffs (though I think they will.)
