Actually a friend at work had a great observation. The NBA owners don't start making money until after the super bowl. I could see them holding the lockout until then. It makes a lot of sense.

No, it doesnt make sense. There is a big difference between making money and losing monday there buddy. Its not like they owners can just wait until after the super bowel and then start a season and be better off. The owners are losing money too, just not nearly as much as the players by not having games.

Yeah, what probably happens is that the games before the Super Bowl (or "super bowel", as you call it, which is what I get after eating an Energy Solutions Arena hot dog) bring the owners to the break-even point in profitability; the profits (on average) come after that.

I also agree that "there is a big difference between making money and losing monday"; if I don't show up Monday, I don't participate in making money :).

The longer that this holdout drags out means that the break-even point is later in the season. It's mutually beneficial to get this deal done, and 50-50 is reasonable.

Yep.

They also say that most teams don't make money until the playoffs start and the deeper in the playoffs they go the more the make. Therefore, going by your friends "great observation", the owners should hold out until the season is over, and then just have playoffs. Then 16 owners will make money and the rest will break exactly even.

Look at the last lock out. the season started right after the super bowl. the fans have less distractions and more disposable income.

You may have heard that many retail stores don't start turning a profit until black Friday (the first shopping day after Thanksgiving), so here's my idea. I'm going to open up a retail store and take the first eleven months off, then I'm going to rake in all of the profit without experiencing any of the expenses in the twelfth month. Flat out brilliant, huh?

Actually there are a lot of companies that do just that. That is why the malls are packed with kiosks during the holiday season. My point is that it is adventagous (sp) to hold the lockout until feb start giving a few concessions in dec.

You're clueless.

Actually I am not clueless I am looking at it from a sales standpoint not that of a fan. Most of the owners are not losing money right now. All make their money other places. Why not wait until you are closer to profitability before starting.

Example: I am working on starting a metal roofing company. Do I want to go out and invest in a bunch of product now but not be able to move it for 6 more months I'll wait until feb to do that and use this time to work other facets of the business Nor would I keep paying my crew. I'll wait until that time when I can be most profitable.

What a fantastic example! Running an NBA team must be almost identicle to starting a metal roof company! I'm sure they're alomost similar! Even though David Stern was on ESPN today announcing how much money the players loose per week withouth a decision, what does he know?? If I was you I would flush your metal roof business down the drain and apply to be an NBA finance accountant!!
Your obviously in the wrong field!

I'm all for shortening the season (82 games is too many), but this is ridiculous.

I'm starting to hate the players more by the day.

Even if the first two or three weeks are cancelled, there's a good chance they'll squeeze the missed games into the season, and we still might get 82 games.

...yeah, instead of playing back to backs....they can play back to back to back...where the turnovers really get high, like say 30 by each team! Shooting percentages would go down to the low teens.....or.....they would just stop playing defense all together and the games would be dunk-a-thons like the all-star games are!
