Anthony Bourdain dead at 61 after suicide..

That's true but everyone is suffering - not a soul on the planet is not suffering to some degree I don't care who you are.

Depression is scary silent killer. Some people may look completely fine to friends and family but deep inside they are a one simple step away from suicide.

I mean, that's certainly true, but people who suffer from depression to the point of taking their lives are true victims as well. It's not 'selfishness' that drives people to suicide. It's a terrible ****ing disease.
I agree, but I think many people who kill their self have become convinced they're doing everyone a favor. They aren't.

We know that. It doesn't change how it feels in the moment. For many it feels like it is the last selfless act you can perform, setting your loved ones free from your darkness once and for all. It is completely irrational, but it is still how many feel at that moment. Hard to reason with someone firmly in the grip of terrifying irrational emotions.

We need to keep talking about this though. The stigma needs to be eradicated. Mental health needs to be viewed no differently than we view high blood pressure or something, a condition to be treated, and that is all (I am not saying it is as simple as blood pressure or anything else to treat, I mean it needs to be viewed the same way in society, as nothing that affects the perception of the worth of an individual any more than high blood pressure does). Otherwise many many people will never get the help they need.

I will miss Bourdain. I enjoyed his shows and his writing and the way he approached life in general. Very sad day. Reminds me of the day Robin Williams died.

Exactly. Depression isn't weakness, it's not self pity, it's not just being a funk, it's an actual disease, and the way we talk about it makes a difference in whether people who need help decide to take it.

Been watching him since the early 2000's and pretty much religiously at my darkest times in life. His shows were like my comfort blanket and helped me out immeasurably. I know many others feel the same. We lost a good man with a kind heart. RIP my friend.

He has been fighting depression for many years, and had talked about being suicidal in the past. He had said he was trying to live for his son and girlfriend. Since he was open about it, I'm sure he was or had in the past gotten treatment, and yet it is not enough. It's sad how far behind we are on mental health issues.

I worry about kids who hear these stories and think that if a rich, successful celebrity can't figure it out, what hope do they have. I did hear that hotlines get an increase of calls after celebrity deaths, so hopefully some lives are saved.

They just did a story on the news about celebrity suicides and said suicides go up afterwards. Called it suicide contagion.

But the ultimate conclusion of depression is not inevitably suicide. Many undiagnosed and untreated people kill their self. Treatment might save those people. Also, depressed suicidal people are not always on the verge of suicide. Generally, even if a person is thinking of suicide often, even if that person plans to kill themself, the act itself is usually somewhat impulsive and spontaneous. If we can find ways to interrupt that impulse we can save lives.

If the message that they are not doing anyone any favors by committing suicide is made clear it might interfere with a person's rationalizations for suicide. And for me, on a personal level, that is a message I want to deliver to anyone thinking of suicide. You're not doing the people you love any favors. You're not helping them. You are crushing them. You are tearing them apart. The pain you are escaping is not going away, it is being transferred to the people who care about you.
