There are a few things here:

First, I think most people projected us winning high 40s in games. Where would we have guessed that had we known the following players would miss as many games as they did:

Hayward -- 9 games.
Hill -- 33 games.
Favors -- 32 games.
Hood -- 23 games.

No way we predict 51 games knowing our starters would combine for 98 missed games (counting Gobert). We'd project maybe a 42 win season.

2015-2016 was also unfortunate because Gobert and Favors combined for 41 games missed and we thought this year we'd be healthy and we were much deeper. It's certainly possible next year could be another anomaly injury year.

If we were able to retain our core (not necessarily saying we would or should) and our core players missed maybe 20 games instead of 100 then we have an entirely different picture. If Hill plays in 75 games, that's huge. If Favors plays at least 70 and regains even a fraction of his partial self and plays the 4, then that's huge. If Hood plays in games and is anything that we've seen from him before and doesn't repeat this playoff garbage, that's huge. All of these are huge question marks, but it's really hard to think we strike out on all three and that things could possibly be any worse and unfortunate than they were this season.

Gobert and Hayward to huge leaps forward this year. Especially after the playoffs, Hayward has arrived and that will translate huge into next season's performance. Gobert too. He'll have to step up as our enforcer. We win 60 games next year, we go further in the playoffs.

Now, obviously the question is how we compete with GSW. I don't know that I realistically see us landing another star in a trade or free agency. Unfortunately, we'll have to rely on the uncertainties above in addition to hoping Exum can come up big. I think Bolomboy and Exum being able to step up and be solid rotation players becomes an X factor for being able to run with these teams. If we had old Favors at the four then we're an entirely different team.

I want Favors resting this off-season and healing up. Ride a bike and swim to stay in shape. I'd like to see him shooting 1,000 threes per day over the summer as there's no sense in him burning down his body on the court doing other things.

If this is as good as this core will be?

I'm curious to see how we will improve this offseason. We will be drafting late and it'll be interesting to see how we manage our financials.

My biggest fear is that gobert and Hayward are our set stars. But that we've topped out. I hope that we haven't whiffed on too many picks to doom gobert and Hayward, as what happened to Memphis, OKC when they had harden, LA Clippers, or even the jazz in the Deron/Boozer/AK/Memo era.

Think about it, Burke, Burks, Exum, Kanter, and Lyles are all zeros. Lyles is our lotto pick from just a few years ago and has contributed less than the jazz bear in this playoff run.

Had Burke, Burks, kanter all played out the same way, but just imagine how great of a series this would be had Exum given us just patty mills production and instead of drafting Lyles we had drafted Booker.

My fear is that we whiffed on too many picks and that this is who we are.

Bitter truth: Our draft picks, sucked in the recent years. Only Hayward, Gobert and Hood were good picks and they got better than everyone expected. The rest were way below expectations.

After Gobert was back, we were almost fully healed in this playoffs. Clippers game 4-5-6-7. Warriors 1-2.
It was obvious this team is two levels below GSW and a level below Spurs, Cavs and Houston. Next year we should be at least on the same page with Houston-Spurs. And that alone needs a good move in the offseason.

Remember one thing; we were underdogs this whole year. Even in the first round vs Clippers noone projected us to win it before Griffin got injured. And i still do think we wouldnt have won that if Griffin was healthy all way long.
Next year things will be different. People will take Jazz much more seriously which will make things harder for us. Plus western conference might potentially be much harder. Pelicans got better, Denver Minnesota Portland all will get better, and we will play 4 times with each. A really tough season awaits us. And when things get tough, only the tough gets going. We desperately need a big move in the offseason. Or we will not be better than 50 wins next year.

I don't get why we are focusing on the warriors.

We would've lost against the clippers had Blake not gone down.

I think it's very debatable if we could beat the rockets and Spurs in a 7 game series.

Beating the Blake-less clippers in 7 seems to have given some fans the thought that we are the 2nd best team in the west. Interesting.

Sorry but it wasn't like the Jazz were at full strength either. I don't think the Jazz can beat GS or SA but they can beat Houston.

The problem with the Jazz is they have been hurt so much you don't know what you have. The Jazz need to improve at the SG, PG and PF position in order to be a REAL contender. They can't wait for guys like Exum and Lyles to get their act together. I like Joe Johnson, Diaw and Ingles but they shouldn't be starting on a championship team. Jazz need to go bold this summer and get a 3rd ALL-STAR while making decisions on "potential" players. It is time to get more athletic guys who can defend and make a shot when needed. Hopefully, the FO realizes some changes are needed to go to the next step.

Based on what?

Who's going to become that 3rd star we so desperately need? This team is still woefully short of shooters, guys who can create off the dribble, and a healthy and effective 4.

This offseason is crucial. I really hope we haven't squandered too many opportunities to improve this team. Lyles instead of Booker was a huge miss

For the last time, stop beating a dead horse. You act like we're the only team who passed on Booker. 11 other teams did. Put Lyles on Phoenix playing 30+ minutes a game with zero pressure to win and he puts ups some nice stats too.

And WTF you mean based on what? Our starters played a total of like 150 minutes together this season.

Huh??

We had 0 "stars" at the beginning of the season and now we have 2...

Thinking Rudy and Gordon have reached their ceiling after their first playoff experience is ludicrous!!!

Gordon can still do more and I'd suggest this loss will burn in his guts all off season and he will come back better again.

Rudy can do SO much!!! Who knows where his ceiling is... He can still defend better ie screens, switching and perimeter and what if he added a few post moves or a 10-12 footer?? MY LORD!

Dante will improve
Hood will improve
Lyles should improve
Alec should be healthy
Favors should be healthy
Quin will improve

At the start of the season if you were to tell me we won a playoff series and got knocked out by the warriors, I'd have thought it a successful year with the playoff experience HUGE for our development.
All of this.

Beating the Blake-less clippers in 7....

In that series, Gobert played 106 minutes. Blake played 100. And the jazz lost Hayward for a game, too. We were the more injured team.

Also, cry less. tia.

Not if everyone on the jazz were healthy.

People who think the jazz won because griffin was out are not being very observant. Folks, we were missing gobert for 4 - 5 of those games. He was on the court for game 4 - 7, but playing on one leg for 3 of them. Also, gordon got food poisoning. So, lose cp for a game and have griffin get partly injured 2 games earlier and NOW we have a fair match as far as injuries go. The fact is that we won the first game WITHOUT gobert and we won the paint battle every game we had gobert whether they had griffin or not. Gobert outplayed DeAndre and Joe Johnson played the wild card role and jj Reddick was cockblocked by a jingler... quit feeling sympathy for the Clippers and their injuries. Man, if we had been healthy for even part of the last two years, we would have had home court this series as well as a chance to develop our core better instead of supplementing so many minutes by the witheys, macks, and Lyles of the world.

Sheesh. All these clipper injury hypotheticals make me sick. WE WERE WAY MORE INJURED, YA HAIRY FARTING COWGIRLS!

Can't live backwards, gotta live forward.

As fans we have The luxury of living backwards momentarily when we ask " what if" , but this is talk for campfires, barrooms, and message boards.

Dennis OLindsey and the jazz live forward asking themselves what might be. The future is uncertain, therefore it has more dangers and opportunities.

Go jazz

This post needs a mutha-effin inspirational soundtrack behind it. Nice.
