Game Thread Apr 21, 2022 07:00PM MT: Jazz vs. Mavericks - Game 3

Added to Calendar: 04-21-22

Been saying it for a while. Quin is NOT a playoff coach.
I called Quin a mediocre playoff coach before last year's playoffs and was lit up for it. Quin has one of the worst playoff records of any active coach who's coached in at least 40 playoff games.

I was wrong, tho. Quin isn't a mediocre playoff coach, he's flat-out bad at it and his teams have been underwhelming in pretty much every playoff series since that OKC win a few years ago.

Why the media continues to carry his water is baffling to me. He's not good when adjustments are essential and unfortunately, that's a big aspect of playoff basketball.

And even when he makes adjustments, like last night when he went small in the fourth, they're either too late or only temporary.

It's maddening.

I do think that Jalen Brunson great grandkids will forever be grateful for how we’ve helped them boost their trust fund this series. Dude looks like prime MJ this series.

Can we and should we close with Conley on the bench. As soon as Brunson went at him from 4mins left it as game over

It wasn't just defensively. Conley had two awful shots after the Jazz pulled within one that completely wasted the momentum they had built. The ball movement with him on the court late was inexcusable for a supposed HoF point guard.

True. We are the least athletic team in the playoffs by a long shot. The talent disparity is large. I think both Minny and NOP would beat us in a best of 7 now.
Technically we tried to achieve what Phoenix achieved with CP3 by acquiring Conley. The guy is skilled enough to make up for the lack of size and athleticism. But the harsh reality is that Conley isn't anywhere near as talented or skilled as CP3, so his lack of size and athleticism gets exposed in a big way and now the Jazz has to face the fact that they have to hide him or even bench him completely in order to win a playoffs series. He's basically our overpaid version of Carmelo or Aldridge who has no business starting or playing over 30min on a contending team. The guy gets outmatched by Jalen ****ing Brunson. Playing off the bench on a min contract may seem more appropriate for him at this point.

The sad part is that he never was any version of Paul. In his entire career, Conley has never averaged over 6.5 assists per game despite having full control of that team for years. And he's only had a couple years averaging 20+ppg. Dude is an amazing guy but not a specialist at anything.

I have no idea what the hell we were thinking with that deal. It was so incredibly stupid. I still say that Jae Crowder helps us as much or maybe even more than Conley has the last 3 postseasons.

Both Crowder and Allen would have been more useful to us in this series, or Brandon Clarke.

Had George Hill agreed to resign with us in 2017 or Atlanta agreed to give us Teague in 2018, it could be them making to the AS team and collecting 20mil paycheck right now.

- I don't think the Paschall lineup is sustainable. It was a good change up lineup. It confused Dallas for awhile and got us back in the game, but once it stopped generating offense it was the right move to get Gobert back in.
- The closing lineup generated open looks from 3. We didn't hit them. As a fan it feels like the other team always makes their open 3's and we always miss them. In this series it's kind of true.
- Royce not taking a FGA is not great. I only remember him passing up one shot though, so I'm not sure he can take all the blame when nobody was passing to him. Royce has shot well in the playoffs, including game 2, they need to find him and he needs to aggressively shoot when he gets the ball.
- We can play good defense for very small stretches. Then we have a miscommunication or give up a fast break, and then completely fall apart. No stamina.
- I won't cheer for us to lose, but getting this season over sooner than later would be very merciful.
Royce shouldn't be playing at all. He's a massive liability on defense and has handles worse than Gobert

We have a talent issue on this team. Having other teams bench player starting for us and other teams rejects playing important bench roles. Quin can adjust all he wants but Mavs can adjust accordingly too once Luka comes back. They just have better players than us. People can laugh at Kleber and Bertans but who do we realistic have on this roster to guard these guys. They are too tall for us and can just shoot over any defenders we throw at them. It's sad really

Athleticism, length, versatility, explosiveness, toughness are necessary and desirable talents.
Jazz just elude them for a long time with a great deal of success.
We got an historic playoff scorer (which was evident since his first season) and had no balls to do what was needed.
Attachment and bad basketball thinking has been killing the Jazz for a long time.
This franchise has made it imposiible for the fan to be just a pure simple and happy homer.

The most frustrating part of being a participant on this forum is the amount of posters that prefer to confirm their biases vs talk in realities. People take hard stances on our personnel and then spend large amounts of space pointing out when their biases are confirmed.

I get frustrated watching our team, then get even more frustrated trying to sift through the message board looking for coherent content.

Luka coming back doesnt make that big of a difference. He is a bad defender and its not like the guys who got extra touches were missing anyways.

This is actually a really good point.

Rudy Gay hasn’t played a minute this series.

We traded Ingles for two guys who aren’t getting time and now get zero salary relief next year instead of the $13M we would have received from letting him expire.

Trades are the only way out for us.

The league should take a look at the hit Royce put on Brunson. Royce should be fined for that. It was a cheap shot and it wasn’t an isolated incident. Play hard and gritty but not dirty.

They should also suspend him for the rest of his contract ;)

He cant guard anyone on dallas. Even if he plays perfect defense it doesn’t matter. He is just too small

Also, cp3 is much much stronger than conley

How many years in the show and he still gets nervous as hell when he touches the ball? He looks like my daughter when she was five years old and got the ball…..get rid of it as fast as possible so you don’t make a mistake.

Phx also has big guards to compensate for cp3. If Booker was 6 foot 2 and they lacked wings, I don't think Phx would be nearly as good.

It's a double whammy for us. Our guards are tiny and our wings aren't long or athletic. That might've been mitigated somewhat had we drafted Bane and Herb Jones. But... We drafted Doka and Butler.

I think we lose this series in 7. Here is my thoughts… we win game 4 because we shoot well. Luka comes back for game 5 and the team has an adjustment to him and he gets cooked on defense a bit… we win game 5 and hopes get raised again. Local media starts saying it was just some bad shooting from us and some hot shooting from them.

We lose game 6 and 7 and someone gets a minor injury and the loses are blamed on that.
