Are the sanctions that Penn State is receiving enough?

I just want it known that I feel like the NCAA took it very easy on Penn State.

I know that I view this much worse than others, but I thought the Death Penalty was the minimum, and I still feel like the state of Pennsylvania should look at pulling any sort of financial support from the university.

I thought they handled it well. I think the death penalty would have been a bit much. I think the sanctions effectively put a death penalty on them for a good amount of time.

I'm interested to see how many of their players transfer.

Like I said, the NCAA was weak in this situation.

I honestly believe that if you are a victim of sexual abuse, or if you have a close relationship with a victim of sexual abuse, you will know that this is not enough.

I still feel like the Death Penalty is not enough but that is the most that the NCAA can do.

Wtf can you do past the death penalty? Actually kill the entire football employees?

Like I said in the other thread, I wouldn't have cared if they did do the "death penalty", but I think what they decided to do was better.

I'm kind of clueless here. What is the Death Penalty when it comes to NCAA sanctions?

Completely ban the football team from competing for at least a year.

They fined them a complete year's revenue, so that is in a way very similar. They will be able to put out a football team this year, but it will undoubtedly suck *** and their profits will probably be lower.

NCAA sanctions Penn St for $60 million (one year gross revenue for Penn St Football)
4-year Postseason Ban
Penn State must also reduce 10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period (confirmed)
Vacate all wins from 1998 - 2011
All players may transfer to another school without sitting out a year
Players allowed to quit the team and keep their scholarship at Penn St
Penn St must add new compliance positions at the school
Probation for 5 years

List of things

I think that would be too harsh of a penalty because of the broader economic effects of Penn State's surrounding area, however, I wouldn't have objected to the punishment. Child abuse is no joking matter.

Penn State has lost a bunch of scholarships and I think they have to pay a huge fine, but I think the greatest 'punishment' they are going to receive is the stigma that they are going to have for a long time.

I'm glad they are allowing the student athletes to either leave for another University or quit the team and continue their education. Those players are going to be faced with an interesting choice.

Yeah, it's never good to have your name be directly associated with child rape.

I am satisfied with the penalties. I was pushing for the death penalty. I wonder if the punishments here are not just as bad without punishing the surounding city as much. Seems like this is a happy medium. Severe penalties on the football program and school. But with far less outside impact than cancelling football would have had. In the end Penn state football could suck for a lot of years because of this.

I like the fine to help abused children. I like the scholorships being reduced (though I do feel like they could have gone farther here). I really like that the current players have options about leaving the school and the football program.

I absolutely agree. This was the best part of the NCAA's decision.

While I agree that is the best part. I was extremely happy with the decision to vacate all wins from the last 13 years or so. Removing JoePa from the top of the career wins list. I am glad that an enabler is no longer at the top of that list.

I didn't even think of that. Rep'd for showing me the light.

This right here really could be just the tip of the iceberg for the university. They're looking at sanctions from the Department of Education and numerous civil lawsuits. Hopefully the sanctions help Penn State to turn things around so that nothing close to what has happened can ever happen there again.

Indeed. That was something I hadn't even considered when thinking about what the sanctions would look like.

I know it must be painful for Joe Pa's family to see their husband and father go down in flames like this. I really do believe he spent his life building up Penn St.

Unfortunately, none of that even comes close to the damage he caused by NOT making the elimination and prosecution of that Cancer, Sandusky, his #1 priority. Had Joe Pa acted like a leader, this whole ugly debacle would have been avoided. I mean, yes, Sandusky's story would have come out... Ugly. Yes, it would have hurt Penn St and that charity a bit. But at least it would have showed that Joe Pa really was a leader. That he heard something horrible and did something about it... Even if it was one of his good friends and former assistants who had done it. But the focus would have been on Sandusky and his ugliness and Joe Pa's leadership in attacking that ugliness. Instead, we see the opposite. No one talks about Sandusky. Everyone talks about Joe Pa's cowardice, the school covering it up, and the raping to continue...

By Joe's lack of action/inadequate action, his name will be forever remembered for this ugly story. How many other boys were raped because of Joe? To me, that destroys a lifetime of Football.

I think most would agree with me by this country's response to the tearing down of the statue.
