Are Utahans friendly?

This was a topic yesterday on a BYU forum I browse and thought it went in interesting directions, so I was wondering what the Jazzfanz consensus might be. What say you?

Depends on the area, but then still depends on each individual.

Around the salt lake area there are more hustler types and dicks. Being poor kind of turns people into cynical dicks. And its less religious around there.

Utah county area people are less dickish. Probably because they are a little gullible and dumb. Being mormon kind of does that to you.

Id prefer living around mormons than the other types. Id rather people be overly kind and bring me jello than try and rip me off.

overall, people in Utah are friendly.

My experience has been that people in Utah are civil, but anything but friendly. They are extremely introverted/paranoid within their own families and you rarely see children play with non-relatives or even outside unless it is in a formal league. It is rare to see kids even out riding a bike and it has been years since I've seen a pick up game of basketball or football or baseball at anyone's home. Adults will say "hi" or wave to neighbors, but that is about it. I have been told in church specifically that no kids should be allowed to play for extended periods of time at someone else's home for safety reasons and that under no circumstances should your children ever stay overnight at anyone else's home even if they are a relative due to safety concerns. Then why the heck is Boy Scouts promoted so heavily with all their camp-outs.

They are civil, but I would not call them friendly.

This is so far from backwards. If there is one place in the country where kids are out riding bikes, sledding, sleepovers and playing sports its Utah. Espeically in areas like Lehi, Eagle Mountain, Daybreak...etc. If there is a state that is closest to the 50's era its Utah.

But in response to your other post I think sleepovers have become strict. Me having two daughters I will make sure I am 100% comfortable with a family before I let them have a sleepover at someone else's house.

There are plenty of nice Utards, but there are a lot of people that will be nice to your face, and judge you behind your back.

This.
Mormons might be judgemental and might not want to associate with someone who drinks and swears and has tattoos etc etc..... but i would rather have mormons living all around me due to the fact that i would worry less about getting robbed or my fence spraypainted with graffitti etc etc.

I would say Utahns are very well mannered, polite, etc. But I don't confuse that with friendly.

I will say that when I was just out of boot camp and living in Il in the Great Lakes area (my apt was north of there in Zion, Il) people were complete jackasses unless you became friends with them or they were trying to sell you something. There were several occasions where I wanted to punch someone in the face for having no manners whatsoever. The worst is that being polite and having good manners seemed to either annoy them or make them think you were some sort of naive rube.

LOL

Not sure if joking, but I really do like Mormons as neighbors. Love living in Utah.
