Approach a stranger on the street to ask an innocent question and be prepared to be treated like a dunce. I sometimes want to go back, I lived in Zion, IL., but man, the people piss me off.
What is considered big? Is Austin considered big? Is New Orleans considered big? Those would be 1a, 1b choices, but they aren't nearly as big as of the ones listed.

Coronado. But I lived in San Diego proper most of the time as well as El Cajon and Rancho San Diego/Cuyamaca.

I spent 4 years in SD and I can tell you with 100% certainty that it is the most over-rated city I've ever been to.
I've spent a lot of time in SF, too, and it is great.... but it has a shelf life. After a couple of years, the zing wears off.
I voted for LA. Here's why:
1. If you have a motorcycle and a bicycle and can avoid traffic, then you avoid the worst part of things.
2. There is alwaoys something surprising and amazing to do. Like, a week ago you didn't even know it was possible.
3. Best food in the world. You can have amazing stuff for under $15. In SF, the same meal would be a gimmick and cost over twice as much. The food in SD is terrible... lazy & unimaginative.
4. Amazing all-around diversity. And, you can be at, say, a Thai Buddhist thing, and have no large architectural thing reminding you are in a western city. The trees and walls can block everything.
5. While you need a knowledgeable guide, that only makes the city cooler.

But I agree about the food. I always wondered if I hadn't found really good restaurants because I didn't put the time and effort into it that I had in SLC, but I really think, with a few exceptions, SLC is a better food city than San Diego.
I spent 6 years in San Diego and never once visited L.A. Same goes for Tijuana. I've been to enough 3rd world **** holes on liberty during deployment I never felt the need.
Hong Kong was my favorite foreign city. I'd really like to take my wife there one day. Talk about good food! You can't turn around without finding amazing food in Hong Kong. And not just Asian food.
Singapore was nice too, but a little too sterile for my taste. It was creepy. Like people were afraid if they stepped out of line big brother would see it and immediately strike them dead.

No major sports teams in Austin. I would say that disqualifies them as a "big" city.

Austin and San Antonio are a million times better than Houston from everything I've heard. Dallas>Houston too
