Beverley to Lakers for THT and Stanley Johnson

Duren was traded for Kemba and it was agreed on draft day. A few days later Burks-Noel were traded for seconds. I don't think that trade happens if Duren is not there on the board, and there's a lot to work out in a short period of time. It's not a similar situation, and I'm not convinced the DET thing was a down payment situation either.

If the WB trade happens, I don't think it's because the Jazz did them a favor. I think it's because they are 100% sure about the THT part and less than 100% sure about the WB part. Why would you do the Lakers a favor and risk taking a worse deal when there is zero downside to waiting a week or two? Like what happens if you do the Lakers a favor and then they change their mind on paying you back for it? A WB trade is still possible, but this down payment stuff doesn't add up lol. I'm 99% sure the Jazz did the THT-Bev trade because they thought it was good and not because they're giving the Lakers a down payment.
Because they might be on the verge of doing the Pacers trade. The Pacers got impatient this offseason and yolo'd an offer sheet to Ayton. Might have said they need an answer now and Lakers needed a good faith deposit to holdoff. We were fine with that deposit being non-refundable if they change their mind.

Why not clear all the salary at once. They might not have known for sure on Jalen... but it really seemed like Det/NY deal was "he we will do this deal now... give us the option to come back later if we need more space". It would have been really easy to project Duren being on the board. It wasn't a surprise.

Despite what HH is saying, this is not a down payment.

They are going to take the better Indiana deal.

So we do a trade now so the Lakers pinkie swear they won't do a trade with the Pacers...yet? OK haha.

I see no reason to believe the Duren deal was a down payment. Chances are it's the same thing, they were 100% sure on one part, but less than 100% sure on the other part. That can happen when the trade has to happen in minutes. IMO, it's way more logical to think that then this down payment nonsense. The question of "why not clear all the salary at once" applies both directions. If everything was all figured out, why would the Knicks agree to a down payment instead of doing it all at once? They only add the risk of DET changing their minds.

I think there's still a chance the Lakers are still deciding between UTA and IND offers....but the down payment theory is a reach if I've ever seen one lol.

The Jazz just insured they get THT. That's all this is. They know they arent coming to an agreement with the Lakers over the two FRP for our vets, so they took the smaller deal to keep THT out of the potential Indiana deal.

MAYBE the Indiana deal never happens and the Lakers come back and do another trade with the Jazz, but the down payment theory is just wishful thinking.

Unless the Bev / Russ beef has been exaggerated, and the Lakers think they could make that work, taking on Bev before having an offer for Russ would be a mistake. Now they would be in a position of weakness with teams knowing they have to find a deal for Russ.

Teams have known this for the last few months after that report that Russ wasnt into taking a lesser role as described by Darvin Ham.

I don't think the Bev / Russ beef matters. The league already knows the Lakers have to find a deal for Russ. You'd have to be living under a rock to not know that. The Pacers, for example, using the Bev / Russ beef as extra leverage in their negotiations is wild to me lol.

All this tells you is that we didn’t have many other options on Bev so it was in the Jazz’s best interest to take what they could for him as they didn’t want him on the team when the season began.
